BUNDY - The Goderich Sailing' - Club will begin informal races. this week, starting at 6 p.m. each Wednesday evening. Ken Dawson, Commodore of the club, says that several sailors have indicated a desire to hold additional races in order to practise their tactics and train their crews. There will not be any boat -class distinc- tion, and starting and timing will be done from one of the lead boats.. Sailors who do not nor- mally race in the -Sun -day - morning events are isn- vited to come out and take part in these Wed- nesday races. In last Sunday's races, which had the skippers trying to figure out the clocking wind shifts, Ken Bauer in "Clairvoyant" finished first, followed closely by Steve Youngblut in "Hawke". After dropping a winch handle overboard; and. having . some spinnaker trouble in the shifting winds, Ken Dawson's "Satin Doll" finished. 'a distant third. The two boats that raced in the PHRF Class finished with records identical to last week's, With Ly?la Meyers first and Dick Taylor second. This weekend the Sailing Club will be trying to finish some of the painting that was started last Saturday on the Snug Harbour Pav'ilion. Saturday evening is the club's gourmet dinner event at the Sunset Golf Club, at which members hope to savor foods with a continental flair. victories nipped Green and Parent 1-0 and then thumped Hotel Bedord 9-4 Monday. Gords got a five -hit shutout performance from Des Courtney on the mound Sunday and he won his own ball gam's with a triple in the second inning to score Bob Riehl with the game's only run. Riehl had tripled with two out in the inning. Gords managed only four hits off losing pitcher Jim Martin but they made them count. Warren Watt and Phil Petrie with singles, had the other Goeds hits. Green and Parent got Fishers thump French 12-5 lose to green and Parent 5-2 Fisher Builders earned a split in their opening two games of the 1980 Industrial Softball League season thumping French 12-5 Sunday and losing , to ,Green, Parent 5-2 Monday. In a season opener Sunday, Fisher belted -t, two French pitchers for 13 hits in scoring 12 runs. They scored one run in the first and second in- ning, exploded for six in the third and added four runs in the sixth. Barry Bloch, Jim Durst, Dennis Lebrun and Steve Barry led the Fisher offence with two hits apiece. Bloch had two singles in five trips while Durst had a single and double in four at bats and scored two runs. Dennis Lebrun had a big day in the eighth slot �,.of the batting order connecting for a double and a two -run homer in the sixth. Doug Fisher and Jim Bell added triples. Ron Klages and Jim McCarthy combined for six of the French 12 hit attack. Klages had two singles and a double while scoring two runs. McCarthy produced three singles and scored one run. Herd and McWhinney shared the mound duties Figure skaters attend Wingham spring school Spring School was held in Wingham this year with a group of skaters from the Goderich Figure Skating Club attending. Test days were held 'on ' -tire- weekend. Nancy Woodard passed her Dutch Waltz; Leslie Rean, Willow; Beth Cook, Willow and Melanie Jeffrey, European. Jackie Crawford and John Hruden also received their jump badges. Congratulations. With this completed, a number of skaters will go on to London for summer school in July. Green and Parent jumped on Paul Corriveau in the first inning as Leroy Meriam tripled and scored on Dennis Miskie's double. G and P then scored four runs in the second inning on five hits. Brian Rumig nailed a two -run homer and Meriam and John Warr doubled and Jim Mar Lin followed with a single t� add two more runs. - Martin stopped Fishers on five hits and had his shutout bid ruined in'the final inning. Wally Pierson hit a leadoff homer in the seventh and Jim Bell scored the second run. Lakeport-Ziebart win games Lakeport Steel and Ziebart both recorded wins in their opening season gainnes in Industrial Softball League action Sunday. Lakeport banged out 12 hits as they dumped McGees 13-5 and Ziebart shaded Canada Company 6-5 on the strength of four homers. ' Lakeport Steel racked up 'a 9-0 lead after three innings and coasted to a 12-5 win over McGees. Tim McLean, Ron Miller, Wayne .Draper, and Frank Hagen had two hits apiece for Lakeport. McLean belted a two -run homer and Miller .and Hagen chipped in with run -scoring triples. In other action, Ziebart batters struck for four home runs in recording a 6-5 decision over Canada Company. • The Company held a 4-0 leadafter two innings before Ziebart bats found the home run range. Wayne Doak hit a tWo-run shot in the third to get the ball rolling. He followed with a solo shot in the fifth and Simon Langlois nailed the third homer to narrow the Company lead to 4-3. That lead stood until the final inning when Langlois belted his second homer, a two -run shot with tow out, to boost Ziebart into a 6-4 lead. Canada Company gamely responded with a single run in the bottom of the seventh but their rally fell short. Langlois allowed five runs on eight hits in picking up the win. He struck out five batters. Glen Tigert gave up six runs despite tossing a five hitter. to Courtney for five hits in the game but they were well scattered. Martin had two of his team's hits. They threatened to tie the game in the seventh inning as Martin led off with a single but Chip Wilson hit into a double play. With two out Brian McLean tripled but was left stranded. On Monday Gords got to Bedford pitcher John Crawford for nine runs on 12 hits in the 9-4 win. Jim Ginn led the of- fensive assault belting -three hits in four trips to the plate and scoring two runs. Courtney chipped in with a double and a single in three at bats and drove in three runs. Gords scored three times in the second inning and scored six runs across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Bedford got a siangle run in the fourth and added three in their final at bat to make the score respectable.
