.an introduces canoein
'A;4SON AINSLIE
When John Galt sailed
Up to the shores of
Goderich in 1827, it came
as :little surprise to him
that ;an Indian war canoe
Should taxi him to land.
Indeed, the sleek, wee
vessels were more
prevalent in days past for
their commercial value
of transporting furs, but
it seems that such craft
will once again return to
Gederich waters.
While power boating
and sailing enjoy great
participation from area
residents, Brian Burton,
a young man with
olympiads of expertise in
canoeing, would_ likQ t
formally introduce that
sport to Goderich.
Mr. Burton is a 30 year
old man, originally from
Port Credit (now part of
Mississauga), who has
been involved in com-
petitive canoeing since
1962. According to
com petition standards,__
however, an athlete of
that age is fast ap-
proaching retirement,
but Burton has no in-
tention of shelving his
enthusiasm just yet.
Instead, he will spend
his summer here
promoting the sport for
its athletic qualities as
well as for its
recreational merits. In
conjunction with the
Goderich Recreation
Board; Mr. Burton has
organized a two day
Clinic for the afternoon
and evening of July 14
and the morning and
afternoon of July 15.
The clinic, presented
by a Canoe Ontario
program called Pad-
dlecade, will gauge
potential local interest. It
will teach the basics of
safety in a half day
lesson? providing all of
the necessary equipment
including boats, paddles
and life jackets to those-
interested
hoseinteres.ted in signing up.
Brian Burton hopes the
project will be popular
among adults and high
school students alike. He
started canoeing himself
in a public school
canoeing program and
ha c_-_.-since.----e n je-yed--
competition years of the
sport.
He has raced at
Burlington, Toronto
-Island and Oakville and
won nine Canadian
championships. All of his
competitive racing has
been done in team
situations in two-man,
four -man, and 15 -man or
war canoes. In 1967, he
represented Canada in
the North American
competition at Expo. In
each of these events
Burton has been the
coxswain.
The coxswain is the
team member who rides
the back of the boat,
steers and calls the
strokes. He explains that
his 125 pounds, ccupled
with his years of
knowledge and rhythm,
make him more suitable
for that position, although
he emphasizes that one
need not be six feet fano
enjoy the sport or even.to
compete:
Mr. Burton works for
Bluewater Insulation out
of Bayfield, but still finds
time for about one and a
half hours of canoeing
each week.
In his one-man canoe
which he calls Entropic,
Burton is able to keep fit
and to practise the fine
texture of his paddle
stroke. In the 40 pound
craft, balance is of op-
timum importance and
an erratic stroke or
movement is more than
enough to upset canoe
and canoeist.
In his canoe, Brian can
paddle up to about ten
miles per hour and,
ciznsidering that that is
anaverage running speed
and half the average
water skiing speed,it is
no small feat. With a little
instruction and practice,
however, such
achievements are at-
trainable, and Brian is
eager to teach anyone the
proper methods.
If the two day July
-clinic is a suc-CEss,'!re-V1i11
begin -plans for a course
to begin at the end of July
and continuing through to
the end of August. This,
he says, will give many
people the chance to
learn about Canada's
national sport.
Aftcr all, canoes were
used in Canada many
years before the hockey
stick was invented and
even today the Olympic
canoeing event is of-
ficially referred to as the
Canadian Canoe Singles.
