In my article cm - Alcoholics Anonymous several weeks ago, I mistakenly reported that the Al -Anon group meets Sunday evenings at Knox Church. The Sunday. evening meetings are in fact closed Alcoholics Anonymous meetings which means that out- siders cannot attend. The Al -Anon meetings are Wednesday evenings at 9 meetings Knox Church. (photo by Elaine Townshend) Hold education seminar BY ELAINE TOWNSHEND Fifteen Goderich and area tutors attended an Adult Basic Education workshop in the new Huron County Library last Saturday. Sponsored by Huron County Library Board, the day -long seminar was led by Freda MacDonald, co-ordinator, and Terri Porter, assistant co- ordinator of London Adult Basic Education. ' The two helped Sheila Fink of Goderich . to initiate an A.B.E. program in Huron County two years ago. The local program now has eleven students scattered around the county and nine tutors. Classes are held .. each Monday evening in Knox Presbyterian Church. Purpose of the workshop was to acquaint tutors with the school's aims and objectives, give insight and un- derstanding into The people they would teaca and inform them of teaching techniques, books and materials. Laubach Teaching Method, used by A.B.E. tutors, was founded by Dr. -Laubach, a mission.ary, in the Philippines during the 1930s, Sound -symbol relationships are established. Students learn through association: that is, . the spoken word is the known; the written word is the unknown. The method has - been processed in - 313 languages representing 105 countries. Laubach Literacy International has headquarters in New York. One in thirteen Canadians is -functionally illiterate: that is, unable to read recipes or newspapers or fill • job application forms. Ages vary from 18 to 75. MacDonald and Porter stressed that tutors must respect their students and have confidence in their ability to learn. A positive approach in tutoring is essential.
