ACK RIDDELL
l P.P.
134th Opposition-
'ila; Crttics have
given their. Parties'
fennel response to the
Frovincial Budget
brought down on April 22.
In his reply, David
Peterson (Lib. London
Centre) tabled a non-
confidence motion saying
the government's
"failure to implement an
economic strategy has
Contributed significantly
to the economic decline of
Ontario."
He accused. the
Treasurer of presenting a
"band-aid" budget which
does not address the
serious economic
problems facing the
province. Referring to
measures to 'aid pen-
sioners, which he
described as "goodies",
he pointed out that these
will result in less money,
compared to property tax
credits on income tax
returns, for some 135,000
senior citizens.
. Some people will get
%100 a year less, while
some wealthier pen-
sioners will get up to $450
a year more.
In addition, he said the
budget ignores the 340,000
unemployed people in
this province, doesn't
provide enough for
research and .develop-
ment and fails to
stimulate energy con-
servation measures.
"The Treasurer is no
Robin Hood," - he said.
"His program befits the
Sheriff of Nottingham
much better."
The NDP Finance
Jack Riddell M.P.P.
Critic also had scant
praise and much
criticism for the budget.
He also criticised the
government for lack of an
industrial strategy, and
condemned its "laissez
faire attitude" toward the
economy for causing
-grew'----e-e rl -i-e-
social suffer Ing. He
called layoffs in the auto
' industry "the most
critical situation facing
any `sector".
Auto Industry
Chrysler of Canada and
the federal and provincial
governme fcontinue to
try to neg tiate details of
a $200 million aid
program for the finan-
cially troubled auto
company following its
parent company's an-
nouncement that it plans
to buy rather than build
its new V6 engine:
This ' news is a
devastating blow for the
town of Windsor where
Chrysler Canada planned
to produce the engine.
.-Bat-h_ - fede-r-al... and____.
provincial governments
insist that Chrysler must
guarantee ,at least 4,500
Canadian jobs if the
'company expects to
receive government
money. The whole idea of
the proposed financial aid
is. to save Canadian jobs,
not the auto company.
Hamilton's Magic
Box
It seems clear that
literally hundreds of
thousands of gallons of
liquid industrial waste at
a Hamilton dump leaked
through a large split in a
holding tank in 1978 and
was only discovered after
six months by a police
investigation.
Charges have not been
pressed against the
company managing the
site by the Ministry of the
Environment because a
certificate of approval
didn't expressly disallow
the dumping of liquid
waste, according to a
ministry spokesman.
• Liberal Leader Stuart
Smith has charged that
the holding tank became
known as "the magic
box" among workers at
the dump and hauurs
who trucked in waste.
"It was magic in that
no matter bow much
waste a hauler put in it,
the waste seemed to
disappear," he said.
•
economic strategy cased economic decline
"What was really hap-
pening was the bottom of
the tank had been eaten
away and the waste
poured into it was simply into the dump's Environment admitted it
disappearing below." .operation, a demand he couldn't account for
Dr. Smith renewed a first made a
call for a judicial inquiry after the Ministry
