i P IE 20 -40ODERICH. SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1980 'nendsh p days in June The Goderich tourist 'committee had a Budget request of $5,000 for Canada Week Friendship Days approved by council. Tile June 28 and 29 Friendship Days will include a parade, fireworks ' from the har- bour and other events involving Bay City officials. The tourist committee aniticipated $500 grants from ser- vice clubs and $300 from the Canada Week Committee. $50 for students The town has donated $50 to the GDCI lalguage department who will be hosting a delegation of 22 students and one instructor from Joliette, Quebec this week. After council had been requested to make a donation for a reception involving 150 Bay City students a policy of $2 per student was adopted by the finance committee. The Joliette students arrive here May 7 while the Bay City group will be here May 15. What day care The township of Tuckersmith wrote a letter to Goderich council regarding the operation of a Day Care Centre for children in the area that the town does not participate in.. They claim the town's portion of last years deficit amounted to $73.22 and asked that council consider paying it. The letter drew some blank stares and raised eyebrows and was referred to the finance committee. Good for trails The maitland Valley Trail" Association would like to develop hiking and.cross country ski trails in the woodlot located' in Industrial; Park. Ifn a letter to council the ' association indicated they would be interested in developing such trails in the wood lot claiming it is ideal for such facilities. They asked for a meeting with the approporiate group to obtain permission to proceed. COMMUNITY NEWS Project boost The McKay hall senior citizen project was given a $5,418 boost from Wintario for equipment for the project. The money will be deposited in the McKay hall reserve fund and invested to be used at a later date for the Mckay Hall project. Earlier council had deleted $7,500 from the maintenance fund for Mckay Hall as suggested in the budget. MPP Jack Riddell informed council by letter Monday that an application for capital assistance has been approved and that a grant of up to $12,125 will be received. The money will be used for the development of the athletic field adjacent to GDCI. On. Monday May 12 the students of GDCI are staging another jog-a-thon to raise money for the project's next phase. The land has been drained and the first phase of the synthetic track is completed as well as the tennis court. Late paper? The Huron County Board of Education, at its regular May 5 meeting, turned down an offer from a pest control company for regular mouse control tactics in all Huron County public and secondary schools. In a letter to the board, the General Pest Control Company Limited stated that it is presently doing a rodent cleanout treatment at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton which involves three phases at a total cost of $420. The company suggested a monthly ser- vice at a rate of $95 a month for tll.e0school or a different deal to do all the schools in the board's jurisdiction. "Anybody can set a mouse trap," member John Henderson said. "Out custodians should be able to do it if they got hold -of the same kind of mouse killer." The substance used in Clinton was a kind of poison that the miceate. It caused them to dry up and disappear after they died. Board -member David Gower said the board should consider the fact that the rodent problem is not as serious elsewhere -as it was in Clinton. "I understand that there was a bit of a problem in the Goderich high school cafeteria a year or two ago." Following ex- tensive investigation by a team Ontario - Provincial Police e�n11d Michigan State Police, the woman's identity was obtained through a set of wedding bands. The identification of the body subsequently led_ to the warrant for the arrest of her ex-husband. It was reported that Woodward gave himself up to Nassau County Police but police here could not confirm that. The state of Michigan .has now initiated ex- tradition proceedings for prosecution of Woodward in Saginaw. It may take a few months before the extradition is completed.
