G.D.C.I. students depart
for Bay City on May 1
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
Canada's good
relationship with its
neighbour to the south is
about to receive another
boost --this time at the
local level --as high school
students at G.D.C.I.
prepare for a cultural
exchange trip with high
school students at
Western High School near
Goderich's sister city of
Bay City, Michigan.
About 77 G.D.C.I.
students --mostly
members of the concert
band and intermediate
band but also singers,
actors and stage crew --
along with a few teachers
and a few parents, will
leave ..the school in two
buses on Thursday, May
1. They will be billeted
with Western students
overnight and on Friday
they will be performing in
Western's .auditorium
during two assemblies for
senior students in the
morning and during an
assembly for junior
students in th.e afternoon.
In the evening, the
Goderich delegation will
be presenting a full
length concert involving
all the performing
groups --the concert band,
intermediate band . and
Sing Out choir. In ad-
dition, the play "Them",
will be performed by
G.D.C.I. students. This
play about mental
retardation was written
by Warren Robinson and
won second prize in a
North American
playwright competition
recently. Mr. Robinson
will direct.
The buses will return to
Goderich some time
Saturday afternoon.
On the second part of:
the exchange trip, two
weeks later, the Bay City
Western High School
Band and Majorettes,.'
under the direction of
Keith Saxton will be
visiting Goderich. in total
this will mean that 156
person -s --students,
teachers and chaperones-
-must be billeted for two
nights. So far, • the
- organizing committee is
only a few billets short of
this goal.
The Bay City group will
arrive about 2 p.m. on
music director, Keith
Saxton. Members of the
band come from each
high school grade and
participate in the band as
one of their daily
scheduled classes.
The band makes many
yearly appearances,
ranging from football
fields and parade routes
to concert stages. They
have made numerous
appearances in Michigan
and Ohio but their per-
formances in Goderich
will mark their first
Canadian visit.
'The group from
Western High School
includes the school's
concert band, stage band
and marching band as
well as a group of
precision majorettes
called the Westernettes.
The stage band is a
fully instrumental
organization which

music from the forties
eight through to 'today's
disco and rock music.
The present concert
band consists of 97
members. Just prior to
• their trip to Goderich
they will have completed
a three night per-
formance at the annual
school variety show and
segments of this show
will be presented in
Goderich.
The Goderich program
will also" include a
segment presenting the
music of the marching
band which performs at
each of the Western
promote all band ac-
tivities.
The club started
working, on the exchange
trip by organizing several
fund-raising events like
the band-a-thon and a
bake sale. With money
raised for the trip,
planning and organizing
came next. Perhaps the
biggest job was finding
156 billets.
Doug Bundy, public
relations officer for the
newly formed club, feels
that the club has really
served a useful purpose
to date. Besides raising
money for the exchange
trip., . money . has-. been
raised to buy some new
uniforms and repair
others. The club meets
about once a month and
also puts out a
newsletter.
G.D.C.I. music and
drama students are now
busy rehearsing almost
every afternoon as they
excitedly look forward to
the upcoming exchange
trip. For many, it is the
first trip outside the
country.
It it hoped that more
such cultural exchanges
can be planned in the
future and the Western
High School band willbe
invited to Goderich's
Canada Week parade on
—June 29.
May is a real music
month for G.D.C.I. music
students since they will
also perform the concert,
,."Night Out For Music" at
the school on May 7.
