Goderich has been sold
to Soo River Comiany
BY
SKIP GRAHAM
The Great Lakes bulk
carrier that has been
called GODERICH since
1964 has been sold by
Upper Lakes Shipping.
Some time this spring she
will -be renamed "Soo
River Trader".
The ship has been an
occasional visitor to the
port to take on salt. She
last loaded here in
December 1978. The
vessel took on six such
cargoes that year
destined for Thunder
Bay. A total of 53,010 tons
headed west in her holds.
On another occasion
Goderich opened the
shipping season at her
namesake port. In 1974
Capt. A. R. Munday, a
native of. Goderich
brought the ship into the
harbour as first of the
year. Capt. Munday
commands • another
Upper Lakes shipping
vessel this season.
Despite the age of the
vessel, the Goderich will
not be entering
retirement. Seventy-four
years of service is long,
even by t Lakes
standards, b this
veteran is rega ded as
having a few more years
of profitable service by
her new owners the Soo
River Company.
This ship was' built by
the Detroit Shipbuilding
Company it Wyandotte,
Michigan in 1906. This
firm ceased building
vessels in 1920 but their
products continue to sail.
Goderich measured 550
feet in overall length.
This was large in her
early years but is
dwarfed by the 1,000• foot
giants that patrol our
Upper Lakes today. Still,
she handles a payload of
11,700 tons.
Ore is n longer the
predominant cargo put
aboard.' Grain usually
fills her holds today as
she 'loads frequently at
Thunder Bay or Toledo
for Sarnia, Port Colborne
and Toronto.
This vessel . , , as
originally called Samel
Mather. It was the thi
such ship by this name
and since then three other
vessels have honored the

council to load and haul
n 18,000 yards of gravel and
4,000 yards of top soil this
late Cleveland in-

became the Pathfinder
for her long-time owners
the Pickands, Mather Co.,.
They sold her to Upper
Lakes Shipping in 1964
and the latter firm
honored a long
association with our port
by applying the name
Goderich.
During the 150th
Anniversary celebrations
in 1977, the Goderich
carried the "Jubilee, - 3"
crest on her bow as she
travelled throughout the
Seaway.
We may see her again
in port under the new
'name as the Soo River
Company ships often
come to the local grain
elevator.
We are reminded -that
another ship that once
was called Goderich
reposes in the harbour:
The grain storage barge

Goderich for Canada

1927 to 1963. She later
became the, Agawa. for
Algoma Central and has
been a port fixture since
1968,
year.
The lowest of five
tenders, Adams will load
and haul 14,000 yards of ,
pit. run gravel at $.62 a
yard. He will also load
and haul 1,000 yards of
top soil at $.62 a yard and
load and haul 2,000 yards
