Hog farmers must be feeling a little like Job in the
Bible.
Heaps of problems are facing most pork producers
from one end of Canada to the other.
In Alberta, a committee has been appointed to look
into the• troubles and serious charges being levelled
throughout the industry. The serious charges have
included collusion and pricelixing. The Alberta Hog
Producers Marketing Board members have indicated
some investigation is necessary against segments of
the packing industry in the province. •
F,
One, politician, Grant' Notley, NDP leader, has
called for a full-scale public inquiry into the
allegations rather than a special parliamentary
committee. Notley is of the opinion the inquiry should
be' public and not held behind committee doors. He
even feels representation on that committee from the

Shell helps
meat -packing industry will negate any reasonable
conclusicin.
In' Quebec, the hog industry is concentrated in the
hands of about half a dozen multi -national or national
companies. Oh yes, a great many farmers are in-
volved but the industry has evolved in a, different way
in Quebec. ,
The big companies are the integratOrs, the finan-
ciers. It's common for these companies toissue
contracts to farmers. The' companies may have
dozens, even hundreds, of farmers raising more than
100,000 hogs on contract. The firms, usually feed
companies, provide money. The farmers provide the
sites.; build the barns and do all the work. '.
These; big companies are, finding things tough.
Disasters in hog raising' in Quebec are coming thick
and fast. When they -lose $10 to $20 on every hog
shipped, they decide to' get out. Unfortunately, they
take dozens of fanners with them when they go. ,
In Ontario, the individual hog farmer is extremely
vulnerable. Truckers in some parts bf the province are
aware of auction sales coming up in the n'ext few
weeks because bankers. will no longer carry the far-
mer.
What's the biggest factor in _these killings?
Feed prices? No, although they are high and going
'higher. Energy costs? No, although they are high and
will go higher. Replacement costs? No, although they
are high and will go higher. Fertilizer costs? No,
although they are high and will increase by at least 20
per, cent this year. Equipment costs? No, although
they are high and will increase by at least 12 per cent
this year. Labor costs? No, although they are high and
will have to increase by 10 percent this Year.
The big killer?
Interest rates.
• These are high, too high, because they are com-
pounded. This is the last straw, so to speak, that is
breaking the farmer's back.
It is a terrible blow to an urban family, for instance,
when a renewed. mortgage at incredibly high interest
rates makes payments impossible. Young families are
forced back into a rental situation again after
scrounging to buy a home.
But. pity the farmer. He doesn't just lose his home.
He loses his entire livelihood. He may have an in-
vestment in land, buildings and equipment that could
top $500,000 and he is being forced to abandon it.
Those with big debts are simply being wiped out. I
know cif-bne young farmer whb worked foi-Tive fears
to get started. He walked into the bank needing money
to buy seed and plant his 1980 crop. He was refused. He
dumped the keys to his house and barn on the banker's
desk and walked away. He got a job in a factory.
It is a tough time for hog farmers because there are
just too many hogs being produced. Prices were high
for five years. Everybody and his uncle got into the
business. The real turn -around will come only when
the U.S. farmers in the mid -West cut back on their
huge production targets, where the real price trends
for all of North America are set.
Ain't it a shame that Canada is tied so tightly to our
big neighbour below the 49th parallel?
If some relief for hog farmers in Canada isn't found
soon, this country could be without this important
section of the agricultural community.
Is anybody out there listening?
