Always interested in. the
prevention of blindness
and a.ssiatance to WO
persons, the Goderich
Lions Club also assisted
in raising, funds for the
building of Tweedsrnuir
Hall and has contributed
with all -other Lions Clubs
in District Al to provide a
recreation area •at Lake
Joseph at Lake MacTier.
The GoderichLions
Club established a fund in
the 1940s to , assist
students who desired to
continue education in
some post -secondary
course. More than $15,000
has been raised over the
years and more than 50
students 'have ,been
assisted. The conditions
.are that financial
assistance is given with
no interest charges until
six months after the
student gains em-
ployment. The fund is
still active and students
continue to share in it.
For years the Goderich
Lions Club has supported
Foster Children in
keeping with its desire to
help all children
For years the Goderich
Lions Club has also
supported minor hockey
and baseball teams. It is
impossible to assess Me
number of hours spent in
coaching and the nutnber
of miles which Lions have
travelled to assist in the
hockey and baseball
programs. The Club was
responsible for setting up
one of the first minor
hockey house leagues
here. It contributed more
than '812,000 to provide a
floor in the first Goderich
arena and financially
supported the building of
the second arena along
with the other Service
clubs in town. The
original Goderich Arena
Commission had five
Lions sitting on it. Being
sports minded, they were
anxious' for such a
commission to be set up.
One of the biggest
things to deVelop out of
the Goderich Liens Club's
support of minor sports
has been Young Canada
Week, the biggest little,
hockey tournament in the
' world. After 31 yearp, this
tournament is s.till going
_ strong, with Jots of _silk
port from the citizens of
the town whobillet out -of -
'town players every year.
.Young Canada Week
started as the idea of -Nip
Whetstone, then chair-
man of the Goderich

Lions Club's boys and
girls committee and
Lore Wakelin, manager
of the newly opened
Goderich Memorial
,orena.. They organized
the first tournament in
1949 for boys 12 years of
age on •the Wednesday of
Easter Week and sent
word that the tournament
was •open to any club
within an area of 30 miles
of Goderich.
Eleven teams entered
this one -day event. The
second tournament had
37 entries and the third
one drew 33 clubs. Each
year _ the, tournament
continued to receive
more entries until it
reached a high of.87 clubs
which is all that could be
accepted for a week-long
event. However, during
Canada's Centennial
celebrations in 1967, 100
clubs took part in. the
tournament. ' An extra
day was needed to play
th 13 extra clubs.
Over 28,000 young
hockey players' have
played in this tournament
sponsored by . the
Goderich Lions Club,
some of whom ha N'e gene
on to play in the NHL.
It would be difficult to
list all the ways in which
the Lions Club has spent
Money in welfare work.
In addition to paying for
having tonsils removed
frbm children whose
parents were unable to
pay the bills, they have
paid for having eyes
straightened, glasses
prOvided, and crippled
legs and feet, corrected.
They have provided
Christmas baskets for the
needy. They ha.ve
sponsored :Girl Guides,
Boy Scouts and Air
Cadets. During World
War II they made.blo,od
donations themselves and
arranged to get ipy..
otbers. They also sent

clothes to people who
were bombed out of their
homes in Egland during
the war' (these donations
were known as Bundits
for Britain). They have
made donations to many
worthwhile causes, one of
the most recent being a
cheque for $5,000 to the
MacKay Centre for
Seniors.,
The good deeds done in
this community by the
Lions Club are far • too
numerous to all be
mentioned.
The Lions Club has
raised money for its good
deeds by putting on plays,
bingo -games, auction
sales, carnivals and even
minstrel shows. They
have sold everything
from peanuts to light
bulbs and have conducted
door-to-door canvasses.
But the Lions Club is
not after •recognition
from the community for a
job well-done. Their pride
comes from within.
Mr. Kinkead explains
that theLions Club logo
sports the head of a lion
with two faces, one
looking back at all the
work that was done and
one looking forward to all
the work that still has to
be done. ,
"As long as there is
work to be done, we'll
keep working," says Mr.
Kinkead.'
He points out that the
Lions Code of Ethics is
very important. In
Lionism,: members can
all have pride in what
they do because they're
striving to improve life
for others. Lions place a
high priority on serving
their fellow man and in
all things they do, their
'sense of pride is silently
felt and measured. •
Hats off anyway to the
Goderich Lions Club and
a great big thank you
from the community
which you have served so
well since 1922.
