Ride for cancer
this Sunday
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
If you haven't already,
now is the time to haul out
your bicycle- for safety
inspection and clean-up
in preparation for Sun-
day's Bike Ride for
Cancer.
The ride will begin at 2
p.m. at the Suncoast Mall
parking •lot. Registration
will take place at the mall
from noon until 1:30 p.m.
This year's ride is
again 20 kilometers but
the ro-u-te has been
changed. It basically will
involve riding around a
designated in -town route
twice
Twenty kilometers may
sound like a great
distance but it really
isn't. Even the most
unathletic people can
easily finish the route
feeling refreshed and
relaxed. However,
participants are at their
own risk. If involvement
could endanger your
helath, you are asked to
withdraw. If you need
help, there will be a
.follow up vehicle. Rest
centres will be set up at
the Kinsmen Centre and
Judith Gooderham Park.
Pop and cookies will be
given out at the end of the
ride.
Reporter Cath Wooden
will represent the Signal -
Star in the ride this year.
She is busy drumming up
pledges now. Is someone
representing your
bus tness7.
It's not too late to enter
the bile-a-thon. All you
have to do is pick up a
pledge sheet at one of the
following places: the
A&P, Zehrs, Kirkey's
Texaco, Macs Milk,
Becker's (South Street),
Victoria and Grey Trust,
the Credit Union or any
bank in town. The pledgee
sheets have a map on
them and a list of rules
and, regulations. All you
haus to do is fill in the
blank spaces with names
of sponsors. Money
should be collected from
these sponsors within two
weeks following the ride
and taken to the Bank of
Montreal in Goderich. All
proceeds will be
designated Cancer
Campaign of the
Goderich Branch,
Canadian Cancer Society.
Last year's bike-a-thon
attracted 53 riders who
raised $2,400 for the
Goderich., branch. The
Kinsmen and Kinettes
who are organizing the
ride for the third year in a
row are hoping for even
more participants and
money this year.
Family participation is
encouraged. Any child
under 12 must be ac-
companied by an adult.
Participants must ride
single file --30 feet apart;
ride with the traffic;
yield to traffic when
necessary; use signals to
warn drivers of moves;
and adjust speed to en-
sure control of bikes.
If it should rain this
Sunday, the bike-a-thon
will be held a week later
on April27.
Take part in the bike-a-
thon--it's a great way to
get some fresh air and..
exercise while at the
same time supporting a
good cause --cancer
research.
