'Barney dealing with Lent' and Easter. Mr. Barney states that Lent :and Easter were not celebrated in the first centuries, and labels these and other Church festivals on an ongoing basis as un-Cbristian. .. Through the years, I have seen Jehovah's Witnesses. attack just about any doctrine of Christianity and belittle all holidays, labeling them as pagan. The Jehovah's' Witnesses are constantly seeking ways to debunk any and all festivals and quote ex- tensively from various encyclopedias and other publications that in some measure back up their4 pre -conceived ideas. If one examines the quotes closely however, one readily sees that they are take verbatim with all the punctuation marks from the Watchtower Magazine or a book published by the Wat- chtower Society, which only partially quotes from these en - Pub is misplaced Dear Editor: Down where I live, there is a misplaced pub. at -is -sitting -right beside -a .. beautiful family park. In the park, we have band concerts, families come for reunions, children play, school buses bring visiting children to eat their' lunches there and the elderly like to sit and look over the lake. • Around the pub are privately owned homes that the owners take pride in, and have a great deal of money invested in. The home opposite the pub has been declared a Heritage house and has a plaque on Tt:'It Used -to he a pleasant place to live. Why do I say the pub is misplaced? Because the homeowner% (and tax- payers) can no longer get a goodnight's sleep!at least not until one -thirty in the morning. People go to pubs to have a good time and are not about to go home quietly. Some indeed are noisy and quarrelsome and wake up the people in the neighbouring homes. It takes real talent for anyone to be witty and able to put same into suitable words. For desired, healthful, equilibrium most of us take ourselves too seriously ...so let's have more fun wherever it can be found, especially in these terribly serious We have endured this. But now, our planning board has accepted the petition -that the 'pub wishes to expand. No longer will the "good times" be confined within the walls of the pub, but indeed will be out in the open - on a patio. To look after the ex- panded clientele, there is to be a parking lot right on a very busy street going down to the lake. I need not point out that compounds a -traffic problem for citizens of Goderich and to visitors• that come to the "pret- tiest town" - as well as to our children who spend their summers down at the beach. If this actually happens the property values will go down, the value pf the family park will. deteriorate and someone will surely be injured or killed because of the traffic problem. • I simply cannot believe that our council will allow this to happen, or our citizens will be apathetic -to-this problem a I am appalled that the planning board takesthe attitude that the property values are the respon- sibility of the owners; that the traffic and noise problems are . the responsibility of, the police; and that the deterioration of .our beautiful park is the problem of our parks board; What is, the fun- ction • of the planning board?
