Recently the Optimist Club was given approval for an outdoor festival in June but some council members were not aware that pians included a beer tent. On Mon- day council endorsed a motion calling for any future beer tents or gardens to be referred to t'he Parks, Traffic and Waterfron committees. The com- mittees are then to report back to council making recommendations on locations and policies to avoid con- fusion. File resolution Town council decided not to act on a resolution from the city of North York asking that a tax credit mechanism be introduced to reduce and even- tually Plirninate property tnxefi_. for the majority of senior citizens. Council had entertained a similar motion in March but decided to defer the matter for further consideration in 1981. Councillors Elsa Haydon and Jim Magee urged council. to concur with the motion to support the resolution but that motion., was defeated. Council opted to receive and file the information. Reeve questions Reeve Eileen Palmer took exception to some committee spending habits before the 1980 budget •has been finalized or approved. She wanted to know why the recreation board proceeded with expenditures to initiate a gymnastics program when the children already learn some gymnastics in school. She also wanted to identify a $1,116 expenditure in the rec board budget that was charged to' Agriculture Park. The tourist com- mittee also hired a secretary to record meeting minutes and Palmer said the committee went off on a tangent to hire a -secretary when the town was trying to cut expenses. The tourist committee chairman, Mac ,Campbell, has been invited to attend the next council meeting. • COMMUNITY NEWS Wants records Councillor Jim Magee has as -ked - council to consider the use of forms. for the town building inspector to insure a complete and accurate record of the progress of buildings and construction. He suggested that inspection forms be kept for each job to maintain proper records and insure • that proper building practices. and procedures are followed. ental rates up Rental rates on town properties and building will be increasing this year following a motion from council Monday. Karl Campbell will have his $300 a month rental, fee increased to $400 as of May 1. A rental agreement with George Feagan for land in Industrial. Park will renewed this year with $400 clue in April and an additional $400 due in October. The agreement will expire in April 1981 and will not be renewed. The town hall apartment rental rates will increase from $150 to $175 per month and Verna's Beauty Salon will pay $100 per month instead of $75. Council rejected a proposed increase .to $150 per month from $75 for the apartment rented by Ruth Charlton. She oc- cupies the apartment above the pot}ce station and was formerly employed by the town and the .finance tom- mittee will review the situation. Eileen Palmer said the town needed more than $70 per month to take care of expenses on the apartment. Shriners coming • Saturday May 3 has been declared • Shrine Day in Goderich. The majority of the ac- counts dealt with tile drain loans. A building permit requested by Keith Allen to build a recreation room addition onto his h^use was issued by council. Another building permit requested by John Auld to build a cottage and addition was ap- proved by council but held pending approval by the Huron County Health Uni-t..._.. — — .... A land severance'ap- plication was requested by H. Shore on behalf of Mrs. T. Sawcher. Council decided to deal with the application. as - per questionnaire. J. Cochrane was present at the council meeting to present a proposed agreement between the Huron County Board of Education and the township for the use of the proposed .township hall. ' The Ministry of Transportation and Communications reported on a proposed speed zone change south of Goderich. Council passed a motion to request that the zone be left as it is at present. A building permit refund of $35 to Bert Van Maar was authorized by council. Council gave per- missiofi to the Women's Hospital Auxiliary to hold a tag day at Zehrs. Council then adjourned until April 17.at-8.p.m. Automatin coming to labs If the board at Alexandra Marine and Gei,ei al Hospital has, its way,'Lthe laboratory will be installing an automated chemistry system to -cut down on the number of manhours Local hospital. to share staff from University Goderich's Alexandra Marine and General Hospital will be sharing the services of a bio- medical engineer in the corning months. The members of the board learned last week that University Hospital in London will be hiring a bio-medicaj engineer soon, and that the five hospitals in Huron County along with hospitals in. Listowel, St. Marys and Ingersoll will share in the salary of that person. • In return, the hospitals involved including AM&G will receive regular servicing of equipment in its operating room, intensive care unit, phsyiotherapy facility and emergency department. Even more attractive is the laact that the participating hospitals will share in the decision making regarding this employee. In fact, Goderich's Elmer Taylor - chairs the Shared Services Committee responsible for this innovation. Taylor explained that in the past, smaller hospitals such as AM&G had to rely.oh private firms to maintain equipment which is operating -e if it t-Iy and safely. -- — W In the majority of cases, Taylor said, this method was found lacking. The adminstrator is confident that with local hospitals having a say in the service, it will be much more valuable and much less inexpensive for hospitals. COME TO US FOR ALL YOUR PLUMBING SUPPLIES - needed to complete the analysis of blood' samples taken at the hospital in a year The equipment will cost about $20,000, but chief lab technologist Ron Klages is certain it will pay for itself in two or three years. Some staffing changes recommended in the AM&G lab have resulted in a new system of shifts which ensures that someone is available - in the lab during the weekends. While this has cutdown on the number of overtime hours worked, it.does cause a shortage of staff in the lab oh rriost days. Fear was expressed that in the summer when the workload increases significantly at the hospital, the lab staff wilibe swamped. It is believed that the automated chemistry system will relieve staff of .much of the time- consuming routine blood work. . Dr.Jim Rourke told the board members Monday evening the automatic equipment is "quite aec'urate and probably more accurate" than th'e•-manual system now employed at the hospital. • It was pointed out by Dr. J.L. Hollingworth that one sample of blood is analyzed 100 times by the equipment before giving out a .'mean' reading to ensure accuracy. "'Dr. Hollingworth said the equipment would provide more accurate readings more quickly. The board was assured that by far the largest percentage of the lab work requested at AM&G is done right at the hospital. The board will probably be in a position to make a decision on the new equipment at its Apr -IF -Meeting. .;.so • gs•«wJa. yN Y 4F" •• '*0•••••••*'•••••***•••••• •••••• •ee•ee••• • 4..r • ^mow AVgyp, ••••••••••••••••*•••••••••••i••*••••*••••0410 • EASTER CUT FROM ® FROZEN • SMOKED • SLICED WHOLE SMOKED • CANADBAEE RADE A • PORK • H A M • • HAMS • PRIME RIB: TURKEYS • SH L ® ® • UTILITY GRADE • OU KERS® STEAKS • 15.17 LB.
