.Lower forecasts
Affect Hydro speridin
Ontario Hydro awarded
contracts worth $1.6
billion in 1979 — down
$600 million or 27 per ceht
from the previous year,
according to a February
report.
• The decrease was due
mainly to slowdowns in
the plant construction
schedule following
reduced load growth
forecasts.
More than half of the
$1.6 billion — $827 million
—was for fuel purchased,
mostly U.S. coal.
Seventy-eight per cent
of the remaining $773
million in contracts went
to Canadian businesses,
up 2.1 par cent aver 1971
Ninety per cent of the
Canadian business was in
Ontario.
Excluding fuels, Hydro
made 100 major purchase
com mitments ($1 million
or more) last year, down
21 per cent from 1978.
Bruce "A" generating
station was awarded four
contracts at $91.4 million
and Bruce "B" was

billion kilowatt hours,, up
43 per cent from the
February 1979 total of
822.4 million kilowatt
hours.
Gross value of thesales
in Canadian dollars was
$38.4 mFllion, up nearly 55
per cent from the $28.4
million in February 1979.
These figures appear
high, but in fact, the
February 1979 figures
were abnormally low.

primary peak demand for
power occurred on
February 29, when it

average of -19 Celsius
that day, in Toronto an
all-time low for that date.

temperature last month
was -8.31, compared to -
10.17 during February,
1979. The normal average
is -5.83.
Ontarians used a total
of 13 242 000 kilowatt
hours in February,
compared to the
February 1979 figure of 13
224 000 kilowatt hours.

ffered to farmers
Sometimes the only
way to .get results from -
companies' and in-
stitutions is to put your
demands on paper. Many
people dismiss this form
of action because it takes
too much time, but the
real reason may be a lack.
of confidence in their
ability to write.
The Ontario Ministry of
Agri-e4:4-tur.e...and toodyin
co-operation with the
University of Guelph, is
offering'. a correspon-
dence course to help
farmers and other in-
terested people improve
their written com-
munication skills.
"The ability to com-
pose a correct, 'per-
suasive, and impressive
letter . is one of the most
important skills in
busines
c o in -
munication," says Gary
Hutchison, of the in-
dependent study division,
University of Guelph.
"Farmers • and other
allied industry people
should learn to write.
confidently because the
written word is more
effective than verbal
communication, par-
ticularly for financial
proposals, income tax
problems, and com-
plaints about goods and
services,"
The Basic Written
ComCommunications course
uses • agricultural
examples to help in-
dividuals improve their
gram mar, punctuation
and sentence structure. It
also discusses different
types of written com-
munication including
business letters, formal
reports, letters of ap-
plication, resumes and
letters of opinion.
The .course, written by
two University of Guelph
professors, is available to
Ontario residents for $50
and $60 to out -of -province
