Reye's Syndrome claims life...
o from Mel
results show that a number of chemicals seem,
to cause a viral disease in animals. The disease
that resembles Reye's Syndrome.
One of these compounds appears in an in-
secticide that is sprayed in eight provinces,
Including Ontario, as well as household goods.
But this discovery is by no ,means the answer
to the problem. The suspected compound is
made up of 22 other chemicals and checking
each one will require years .of tedious research
and no end results or positive findings are
guaranteed.
Still studies must continue and Dr. Safe
pointed out that research must start-,
somewhere and so far studying the suspected'
chemicals seems to be . the most promising
direction to take.
In the meantime, doctors are striving to treat
the disease to the best of their knowledge. Dr.
Sibbald'• said that medical advances have
tl
aireagy turtiuu 4 disease's dealt rate around.
and the majority of victims died in the 1960's.
In most cases today, early detection and
proper treatment can save the young victims.
Along with the drug induced coma, patients
with severe cases have their body tem-
peratures lowered to reduce both the need of
oxygen in the brain and chances of brain
damage. If necessary., the top of the skull is
lifted to reduce -pressure on the brain, the
immediate cause of death from the disease.
While physicians stress that ,the disease is
rare, suspectedsymptoms include progressive
vomiting, lethargy or tiredness and want of
sleep or abnorthal behavior. If a child has the
flu and doesn't appear to be responding
properly, the family doctor should be con-
sulted.
It is estimated that there could be 100 cases of
Reye's Syndrome in Canada this year, and
between 350 and 400 cases in the U.S..
