Council finds
road costs up
LUCKNOW - 'High in-
creases in costs may
force Lucknow council to
cut back on their road
work•this year.
With asphalt up $4a ton
and the cost of sewers up
by 30 percent, the village
council plans to look at
their proposed road
reconstruction and
maintenance plan and
will see if the ministry of
transportation and
communication (MTC)
has a supplementary
grant available.
Last year the council
asked the MTC for an
additional $10,000, but
their request was turned
down.
This year the council_
was hoping to reconstruct
one of the village's main
streets and also planned
to complete recon-
struction of some
sidewalks.
The village's budget for
road maintenance acrd
reconstruction for 1980
totals $94,000.
Engineers estimated
that $87,500 would be
needed for the -..recon-
struction program, but
council feels that if that
much was spend they
might be short with only
$6,500 for maintenanoe.
Council had budgeted
$21,500 for this.
Safe
landing
LISTOWEL - It was
fortunate for a local pilot
that a farmer had been
out spreading manure.
Mary Fretz of Listowel•
was flying hit -Cessna 182
back from North Bay
when he attempted to
lancL the plane at the
Johnston Airstrip near
Atwood.
Coming in on a night
landing, the pilot
discovered that the lights
on the runway where bff
and icing conditions
forced him to make an
emergency landing in a
field adjacent to the
runway.
Frozen manure on the
field .allowed the plane to
make a safe landing. Mr.
Fretz's. wife explained
that if the plane had
landed on the runway it
would hve flipped over in
the two feet of snow that
covered the landing strip.
