Pocono, mour.ntains poular boneyoon spot
It started almost by
accident. During the
early years of World War
II, American servicemen
stationed at nearby
Eastern bases took their
R and R in the Pocono
Mountains in Penn-
sylvania where they were
often joined by
girlfriend's and families,
often seeing each other
forthe final time before
the boys went overseas.
But the beauty of the
Pocono area— the rolling
hills and woodlands,. the
—breathtaking views, The
waterfalls and all the
splendor of nature's
handiwork —remained in
the boys' memories.
When the war ended or c,
their part in it was done,
many returned home,
married and came back
to the Poconos and the
fond -memories they held
of the area.
In 1945, the firststrictly
honeymoon resort opened
in the Poconos, bearing
no resemblance leo the
glamorous and spec-
tacular industry it
launched. Couples
honeymooned in log -
cabins, took turns waiting
on tallies inthe dining
hall and kept house for
themselves.
Couples had to send in
pictures before being
accepted and Roman
Catholics were usually
not accepted since the

Though honeymoon
resorts have risen aitdT1-•.•-.--
fallen in popularity with
newlyweds over the past
three and a half decades,
the, charm and allure.of.
the Pd'conos has con-
sistently claimed a major
share of the national
honeymoon market every
year.
It was actually not until
the• early 1960s when the
Poconos came into their
own as a hon:y'inoon
destination. In 1960, Life
Magazine ran photos and
a story on the now well-
publicized heart -shaped
bathtub, whose inventor
owned a Pocono
honeymoon resort that
helped convert sex into a
marketable commodity
for honeymooners.
Around that time, one
of the ' United State's
leading bridal magazines
dubbed the Poconos as'
the "Honeymoon Capital
of the World," and
couples began flocking'to
the mountains in search
6
of a fantasy world of love
and romance. They were
not disappointed.
Today's honeymoon
resorts boast some of the
most elegant and
luxurious and sensual
accommodations
available in the world
today.
Guests are pampered
from arrival to departure
with anything they
desire, including
champagne breakfasts;-'
champagne brunches,
champagne and candlelit,
dinners for two, swim-
ming pools in their own
rooms, heart -shaped
baths and jacuzzis,
canopied, round and king-
sized beds and the finest
cuisine served anywhere. -
One of the reasons for
the popularity of the
Pocono honeymoon
seems to lie in the fact.
that . even though
honeymooners like to, be
alone, they like the idea
nf being with their con-
temporaries (other
honeymooners) with
whom they`feel at ease,
when and if they so
choose./ Realizing this
early in the game, the
honeymoon resort owners
provided a couples -only
atmosphere that was
much to the liking of their
guests.
Resorts offer numerous
tours of the Pocono area
to their guests and
arrange golfing and
skiing and other
recreations upon request.
The couple may,
however, find it just as
advantageous to spend
