Committee 'recom-
mended extensive
recreational develop-
ment along the Goderich
waterfront area in its
final report to. town -
council. .
The committee, with
Don Wheeler as chair-
man, was established in
September of 1977. Its
purpose was to provide
input into the Maitland
Valley Conservation,
study, to define existing
uses of the waterfront
and determine what
potential there is for"
expansion of recreational
facilities, park land,
industrial and com-
mercial uses of the
waterfront, and to
present recom-
mendations to', town
council as to the future
development of the
waterfront.
The committee
recommended continued
development of the area
used as a landfill site into
a year round recreational
that the town work with
Colborne Township to
develop the open space
known as the flats into
seasonal recreational
areas.

strongly recommended
that the town take steps
to' immediately im- '
plement development of
the beach area from the
CPR track to the town
limits as a muitiT urpose
waterfront park. The
report stated, that, "we

plan to cover the area.
Also regarding zoning,
the members of the
committee emphasized
that all new commercial
and industrial uses of the
south side of the harbour
should be carefully
evaluated by the planning
board to determine a
proposal's compatibility
with existing harbour

Concerning the
waterfront' environment,
the committee suggested
that the town open
negotiations with the
VC;nzuent to
correct the problem of
siltation build-up north of
the harbour and siltation
depletion south of . the
harbour.
The members also,
recommended that
pollution sources con-
tinue- to be monitored,
and that polluters and
trash dumpers be more
severely dealt with. They
also suggested a serious
look at methods of con-
trolling erosion. •
In its conclusion, the
committee recommended
that "it might be prudent
to use some of the ex-
pertise gained by,
members to form a group
similar to the parks
advisory committee to
work in conjunction with
the municipal harbour
committee."

The Square • has been
crowded the past few
afternoons and.evenings,
"because," as' a lady
remarked, "it's the only
part 'of the town where
,one 'can. have a com-•
fortable walk." "•
For several weeks
there has been more

won in Clinton won ..on
Monday by 2 goals to 1,
after a very close match.

Vicki Needham, two-
year-old daughter of Mr.
-and Mrs. Robert
Needham, swallowed the
-'eye from her teddy bear
on Tuesday. Rushed to
Alexandra Hospital, she
was then taken to War
Memorial Children's.

seizure. He was 63.
A fishing boat with
three Goderich men on
board was stuck in the ice
off Bluewater Beach late
yesterday afternoon and
indications were that
rescuers would not be
able to reach them until
this morning.
On the boat are Mack
MacDonald, the owner;
his son Norman, and
-Clayton Weston, all of
Goderich.
5 YEARS AGO
County coucil approved
their 1975 budget at a
special Meeting Tuesday
which shows the total
expenditures for the year
to be $7,244,142.
MacKay Hall is getting
a new roof and some
renovations tp the
basement, Goderich town
council Monday evening
approved the tender of
Conklin Lumber for a
price of $6,943.07 to
complete the project.
