Smyth The United Church o1 Canada Some of you may remember seeing a household picture, once as familiar as that of Queen Victoria, • 'of the woman who had been so:overwhelmed in a sea ----©f=trotlble 'as -to -be cast up by "the waves oF hfe on a rock. There she clings to a cross set up for ship- wrecked souls. However, this was not Jesus' state of mind. He was about to go to Jerusalem and to Calvary. Others could accompany him, but nobody could substitute for him. So, Jesus was thinking, not of any limp and timid person clinging to something outside himself, but rather of a vigorous, rational life that shouldered its own responsibility and made its journey under it. "If any man would come after me," said the Master, "let him take up his cross and follow me.': (Mark 8:34) Jesus sees, for instance, a youth, beset by a major temptation or problem — his temper, sensuality, uncertain job' prospect, skepticism or his despair over being able to do anything to counter gigantic forces moving society towards destruction. Jesus says to this youth, "That is your cross, your very own cross. Don't shirk it by turning to drugs or by blaming the alder generation. Don't turn im- mediately to my cross. First of all, take up your own. Let its full weight fall on your shoulder." The divine Teacher continues, "Then stand up manfully and follow me. And as you come, not with hesitation or complaints, but with the step — even staggering step — of an individual honestly doing his share, you' will find that your way opens into en- lightenment and power." Jesus concludes, "The cross that YOU carry Will grow easier to hold. The burden of YOUR concern will be made light." Written for this newspaper hti Dr. Gordon C, Smyth, Stone - crest Farnt, R. R. She believes that both men and women were created in the image of God and that they complement each other as God's servants. Mrs. Peters and her husband served as missionaries in Brazil for the two started discussing the Christian concept of women. The two felt certain that other women were as con- cerned as they about the Christian message"- for women. Rather than dwelling on Bible passages which seem to place women in an inferior position, the leaders hope to focus on positive female role - models in the Bible. Mrs. Peters said there are many strong and powerful female characters in the Bible who may have been overlooked in the ensuing centuries.
