The victories .were the second and third of the playoff series for Leamington and they won the best -of -five series in four games, • - The Stars made a ptaydowrrs--to qua-rir ribs the Ontario Cham- pionships Mar. 28 and 29 in London. ------The oderTh Gee -Gees captured the Lakeshore Intermediate Basketball League championship last Sunday with victories neer Owen mound, and Port Elgin in -a round robin tournament. The double Gees first game was against last year's champions, Owen Sound, with Goderich coming out on top in an 82-62 victory. The Gee Gees were led by the sharp shooting Greg Beacom who saved his best games of the season for the league cham- pionship, netting 28 points in the first contest. Beacom was also the sparkplug of the defence coming up with countless rebounds and blocked shots. The only other player to reach double figures was Dave Ross who hit for 10 points -The remainder of the scoring was shared by Warren Watt and Jeff Baechler with nine points each, Pete Cameron and Al Sygrove, six each and Bill Gawley and Greg Smith with five and four points respectively. . The Gee Gees second game was against the vastly improved Port Elgin team. Despite. 'losing, a hard fought game against Owen Sound 62-52, they were in the position to become ,spoilers if they;- could • come up. with a big Win over the Gee Gees. The Port played: a tough physical game resuWng-"lit a-35=32- a1r- time lead. Port Elgin actually had the Goderich team on the verge .of a route leading by as much as 12 points early in the half. Fortunately the second half was all Goderich with Greg Beacom connecting for 14 of his 18 points. Jim Watt supported Beacom's fine offensive effort by. connecting on seveti of nine foul shots late in -the game. The Port Elgin.legs seemed to tire under the constant pressure as Coach Phil Bugler used his superior bench strength to 'good use. All players on the Gee Gee roster shared in the scoring. Leamington tied the series with a 5-4 victory in Goderich and Friday they took a 2-1 lead in games with their second 5-4 win. They wrapped the"series, in Leamington Saturday with a convincing 9-1 victory. In the third game here Friday the Stars led 2-0 after one period of play and carried that lead into i�—-rriia7_._.._ prToa '- Leamington came to life in the final period and aided by numerous Star. penalties., outscored the home team 5-2 to win the garne 5-4. Goderich took to the offence quickly in the opening period • and,. produced a 2-0 lead. (photo by Cath dropped two games on the weekend, 5-4 Friday and Wooden) Woodstock clinches bantarn series The Woodstock ban- tams swept three games from the Goderich Garb and Gears this week to win the quarter 'finals series in five gam -es. The series loss was a tough one for the Garb and Gears as they took a 2-0 lead in the best -of -five series with back to back 3-2 victories. But the series clinching garne 'was an elusive one. Woodstock battled back to win three straight games -and advance to the semi-finals. Woodstock won the third game 4-3 at home, blanked the Garb and Gears 7-0 here Saturday and clinched the series with a 5-2 •win in the deciding game in Woodstock Monday.. In the third game the team.s tied 1-1 .after fone period bu4 Woodstock carried a 4-2•lead into the final period. Goderich enjoyed four powerplay° opportunities in the final but managed only one goal in losing 4-3. Jeff Feagan led the Goderich offence with a goal and an assist while Chris Starkey and Paul Brenner ;scored one goal each in the loss. Woodstock tied the series here Saturday with a convincing 7-0 win. The teams played through a scoreless first period but-- Woodstock ut- Woodstock scored three times in the second period and clinched the win with four unanswered goals in the final period. Goderich had three manpower advantages in the second period of that game but were unable to produce a goal and get back in the game. TIS final game of the series provided a - dramatic finish but Woodstock scored five times in the final period, including one into , an empty net, to eliminate Goderich with a 5-2 win. Goderich led 1-0 ot, a responded with three goals in a four minute span and held a 4-3 lead with six minutes remaining. Hallam scored his -Second goal of the game to tie the score 4-4 at.9.17 but that's where the good news stopped. Plagued by a rash of penalties the. Stars surrendered the winning goal at 11.41 and .were unalbe to get back on even -terms. The loss took the spirit out of their effort and Sunday they were blitzed 9-1 and eliminated from ---OMHA play_ -------. Leamington Leamington led 3-0 after one period but Greg Hallam narrowed the gap with a goal in' the second period. It was downhill from there, however, as the: Stars pressed in the offensive zone and were caught up ice on several occassions and surren- dered break away goals. The final was 9-1. The Stara will be in- volved in Shamrock league playoffs sometime later this month. They finished first in regular season play and will host the playoff series at the Goderich Community Centre.
