The Goderich Signal-Star, 1980-02-28, Page 98.4 SIGHAP,STAR, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1980 ong s • BY KATHRYN MacKAY When Dani woke up he lay on his bed, he strut- • ched his arms and Watched his head, he played with his dog, as he Always did, for Daniel Dong was a normal kid. Then all of a sudden hE lept on the floor, hE whooped, and he yelled and he ran out the door He ran down the stairs he jumped up and down His mother _was, smiling, but she tried hard tc frown. "Dan," she scolded, she tried to sound stern, "Darr, be quiet-, why c -an :t you learn? Breakfast's a quiet and calm sort of meal:" "My birthday!" laughed Dan, "Now that's a big deal! My birthday's today." he shouted with glee, "My birthday's today - there's a party for me!" Then he ran upstairs and threw on his clothes, then he wolfed his break- fast and bounced on his toes. On the way to school kids called to him, "Happy Birthday Dan." And his best friend Kim gave him a card and laughed as she said, "Happy Birthday Dan, here's a card instead." "Instead of what?" Dan said to her face. "I can't come to the party tonight: at 'your- -place. "Oh," said Dan, but he' wasn't too sad - a party without her wouldn't be bad. "I guess your' busy .or something like that?" "Ya", Kim replied, "I must buy a hat." "Oh," said Dan, but he didn't dare say — why don't you do that a different day. He only said, "Well thanks for the card. He tried td smile, but that was hard. Oh well, he thought, there's plenty more. A party without her won't be a bore. . Then Kim ran off and along came Bill, a friend of Dan's who lived up the hill. "Hi Dan," Bill puffed _........._...-,.._r-_.-he-'d-been-_-r-uruling -hard,. - "Hi. Dan," he gasped, "Here is your card. You know your party? Well, I just can't come. I have to go out after, school with my., morn." "Oh, too bad," said Dan while he thought, there are ten other kids, the party's not shot. Then off ran Bill and along came Steve. "Hi Dan;" he said, "I have to leave . — a dentist ap- pointment I" hate them you know — so I guess to your party I can't go." "Oh' well, thought Dan, that still leaves nine. He laughed and he smiled, but he didn't feel fine. All through the •, .day nine kids one by one wished him they hoped his party was fun. They all were so sorry, but they just couldn't come. And Daniel inside felt pretty glum. But he laughed and he talked and he made quite a din and finally the teacher, his patience woria--than,-yelled,-'-'-Dong you've been talking in whispers all day — so after school hours you'll just have to stay. You'll sharpen the pencils and wash off your desk, you really should learn not to be such a pest." "Oh Teacher," Dan cried, "I've a party you know." Although he knew that no one would go. "I can't stay in late, or at least not today -" "Too bad," said the teacher. "That's all 1 can say." So Dan stayed behind, he felt so alone. Oh well, he thought. My party is blown. When Daniel trudged home, he felt sad and glum. How could he ever explain to his morn that nobody liked him, that no one would come. He sighed as he walked and he whispered, "Oh birthday party Kim tells Dan she can't come crumb." Some birthday I've had, some day this has been. I feel so bad, it's been so mean. "Oh crumb," he sighed when he saw his house, I'll creep inside like a quiet mouse, I'll creep up the stairs and hide in my room. I'll just talk to Dog about birthday gloom. When Daniel walked through the house's front door he blinked his eyes so he could see some more. The house was dark, as dark as night, so Daniel flicked on the front hall light. And then Daniel Dong couldn't trust his eyes! For thousands of people shouted ' 'Surprise! Surprise!" they yelled. to his party. "Surprise!" they said and Daniel laughed and heldhis head. He laughed and laughed — he'd been such a fool to feel so bad on the way home from school. Of course he had friends - he should know that by now - so Daniel R. DONG TOOK A BIR- THDAY. BOW. And after they sang "Happy Birthday" to him Daniel looked over and smiled at Kim. "We fooled you," she cried, "We fooled you Dan Dong". And Daniel replied, "Yes, -you did all along." Kim laughed as she said, "This 'party's a hit!" "Well," mumbled Dan, "I was worried a bit."
