The people of the
Anglican Church of
Canada are being asked
to "try out" a new,
modernized form of they
Communion Service or
Holy Eucharist.
Strangely, however, it is
not expected to Cause
anything like the furor a
complete new Prayer
Book has:caused south of
the border in the
Episcopal Church in the
U.S.A. even though
Canada's new rite shares
much in common ''ith
that book.
The group. responsible
for creating the new
service is the Doctrine
and Worship Committee
of the General Synod of
the Church. Its Chair-
man, the Rt. Rev. H.V.R.
Short, Bishop of the
Diocese of Saskat-
chewan, commenting on
whether the new
Eucharist will cause
controversy in .the
Church said, "I think
there will be some, and I
think we have to proceed
very slowly. People love
the Prayer' Book as
they've known •it. They
love the language even if
they don't always un-
derstand, and I'm not
absolutely persuaded
how important lucidity is
when you're talking
•
The Bishop said, "I
really hesitate to talk
• about new°forms, they're
not new. The shape is the
same but there are,
certain thin.gs revised.
The langiiiage is different.
That is sdmething which I
,think • causes more
distress than anything
else - the fact that the
Elizabethan language of
the familiar Book of
Common Prayer has
been left behind." ,
The new Communion
Service is available now
in booklet form so that
WHEN IT COMES TO
congregations can ac-
tually use it and get a
"feel" for it before it is
presented for acceptance
at the church's General
Synod in June 1980.
Bishop Short cautioned,
"I want to make it quite
clear that the Doctrine
and Worship Committee
is not a self-appointed
authority trying to push
something on the Church.
The National Executive
Council approved this
publication and the
Bishops arefree to use it
or not as they choose. We,
have submitted it to the
Church at large, to the
N.E.C., to the House of
Bishops and we are
planning to present this to
General Synod."
Even if -General Synod
does pass the new
Eucharist it will not
replace the present
Prayer Book Version. It
will be' a4ailable as an
alternate, just as there
are already modern
versions of the Baptism,
Marriage and Burial
Offices' which. earlier
received the approval of,
General Syn.od and' are
now in use as alternative
Services.
Another member of the
Doctrine and Worship
Committee, the Ven.
John McMulkin pointed
out one of the interesting
--a-sprects------of-----tfre- new
Eucharist. Because of
similar revisions going on
in other countries
among • several'
—.
•denominations there is a
kind of "levelling off"
going on so that
American - and English
' Anglicans and Canadian
• Lutherans and Roman
Catholics would feel very
much at home with the
new Anglican Eucharist.
Copies of the proposed
new liturgy are available
from the Anglican Book
