The Board of Education
leased the land to the
town of Goderich and the
plans for the athletic field
included a synthetic
track, a softball diamond,
an asphalt basketball
court, a football field and
a soccer pitch.
When plans were in the
intitial stages in the early
705 the cost far. land
;Arequage was estimated
at $22,000 and the syn-
thetic track Could be

years' later the costs
inflated to $80,000 for the

Culture and Recreation,
Wintario and Community
Centres the project
finally got underway in
1979.

July. Later in the sum-
mer a synthetic track
was installed, an asphalt
basketball court and the
land wm seeded.
There is -still some work
to be done on the field but
it has at least come a long
way with the initiative of
the students.
Dreams of gold became reality
Oldtimers won gold
The 1970s brciUght a
new wave of hockey in-
terest to Canada.
Oldtimers hockey
became, a popular sport
across the land and soon
a Canadian. Oldtimers
Association was formed.
Oldtimers hockey offered
a revised version of the
game 'to men ovei, 35
years old. The rules
' called for no body contact
and the slapshot was
abandoned.
The sport grew quickly
popularity as
evidenced by the fact that
several teams -in the area
were formed including
the Goderich Oldtimers
'hockey club.

• several exhibition games
in the area,while
_preparing tor their first
tournament in Zurich,
Switzerland in March,

The Oldtimers held
several fund-raising
events to help defray trip
expenses and were set to
leave Goderich March 11
with an official Jubilee
flag that was to be
presented to the •Zurich
mayor.
, The Oldtimers.Were not
expecting great things in
their first International
Tournament but the town
buzzed with excitement
as news arrived that the
home town boys had
captured the, gold medal
in the D Division.
The team triumphantly
returned to Goderich ofi
sunday, March 20.
Despite the long overseas
flight, they were greeted
at 2 a.m. by the Goderich
Fire Department trucks
for a parade around town
and were taken to Salt-,
ford Valley Hall where
hordes of people had
gathered to greet the
medalists.
The celebration for the
hockey players went until
about 7 a.m. Monday
• rruirning _and _ended only --
because many people had
to go to work.
The Oldtimerp were
undefeated in the 'tour-
nament winning four
games and tying one.
They defeated• Rap.:
perswil 3-1 in their first
game and then tied St.
.I.ohn 2-2 in their_ spc'ond_
game played on an
outdoor rink.
They handily won the
third tournament game
with a 5-1 victory over
Summerside, P.E.I. In
the semi-final Goderich
came throfugh with a
tough 2-1. win,, • over
Morpeth a team that had
beaten Goderich 4-1 in a
tournament in St.
Tlaomas earlier.
The Oldtimers then
won the gold medal in the
D division with a 2-0
victory over Rapperswii,
Switzerland.
In 1978 the Goderich
Oldtimers •travelled - to
Denmark for the
European Oldtirners
Tournament and their
previdus win boosted the
team into the C division.
They lost their first
game . 3-1 to Basle,
Switzerland but
rebounded for a 3-3 tie
against .Red Deer in the,
second game. They were
eliminated from com-
petitltin in the third game
with a 4-2loss to Midland.

played in Florida and
much to their surprise
were awarded a silver
medal. The team was at a
loss to explain their silver. .

host their first in-
ternational tournament

featuring 12 teams in-
clduing, Cleveland, Ohio.

Huron -Perth cham-
pionship. One of the
members, Chris Wood,
was the Wossa cham-
.pionship_at-15-
went to the Ontario final
in Ottawa. He won all
seven of his bouts in the
