BIA makes renovation possible.
It is difficult to assess
the effect of im-
provements . to The
Square in Goderich on
business in the core area
because merchants F are
going through' unusual
business` conditions. It
• has been a difficult
business year brought on
by the uncertainty
created by - the
diminishing 'dollar and
the current state of world
affairs.
It is a province wide
condition according to
John Schaefer, a member
of the Goderich Business
Improve nt
Association IA).
Since the formation of
the association three
years ago, The Square
has taken on a new look.
Concrete sidewalkshave
been replaced with in-
terlockinng brick and
trees have been planted
along the sidewalks. New'
globe light standards
have replaced con-
ventional street lighting.
The BIA through a levy
itaposed on everyone
"paying business tax in the°
area paid for the brick,
the trees and the lights
outside The Square.

-An extension of the
work begun on The
Square will be un-
dertaken over the next
five year period by the
BIA. Some of the side
streets radiating from
The Square are more
deteriorated than The
Square but the BIA
thought it logical that the
work be started from the
centre•and radiate,out. .-
Plans are. being
finalized and approved by
the BIA board of
management to be
presented to those
assessed under the $IA.
The plans will' then be
presented td town council
for approval. The.BIA is
requesting approval for "
application ''to the
provincial government
for a loan of $150,000 to be
repaid over a ten year
period. The amount to be
repaid is $165,000 which is
a very attractive

Merchants, on The

on Bayfield Road 'was
proposed in 1973. The
Square merchants were
opposed to the new mall
because theyfelt it would
fragment business and a
feasibility study showed
there was already enough
space for department
stores although more
square footage of food
