Starting in 1975, the
Parks Committee of
Councillors Elsa Hayden
and David Gower ..and
including the present
termcommittee of
Councillors John Doherty
and Elsa H'aydon, there
has been a considerable
number of changes and
additions.
A Parks Advisory
Committee, • was
established, tiler-original—
members being Messrs.
R. Menzies, D. Stewart,
and 13. Wisser. On Mr.
Menzies-retire.m-entfxom.
the Committee, Mr. S.
Paquette joined it. _ The
knowledge, • experience
and support of the
Advisory Members has
been of greatest help in
Parks work. The Parks
Advisory Committee also
acts as the Tree Com-
mittee.
Foreman Paul Spain
has participated in a
week long parks course at
Guelph University as well
as attenling flower shows
in different locations. He
also visited the Brantford
Parks Department to
learn- from their • suc-
cessful practices and
ideas with flowers.
Tree planting and care
techniques have been
improved. The planting
of 250-350 quality nursery
trees a year of bigger
sizes is keeping ahead of
the 1OQ-200 deadtrees cut
down every winter.
A day long tree trim-
ming and cutting seminar
was' conducted in
Goderich, with the help of
Lambton College, Sarnia.

pton Parks as well as the
local PUC and Public �.
Works and some citizens
also attended,
With `the. help of the
Tree Committee, the •
university of Guelph,
Davey Tree Experts' and.
Commissioner of Works,
Kenneth Hunter a
program' was set up -to
identify and treat,
whenever `possiliTE tthe—
diseases ' first crippling
and then killing an
alarming number of
trees, particularly, the
older ones. Records of
such trees were kept and
a .:system of suitable
replacements set up.
With the help of the
Advisory Commitee, a
turf fertilizing and weed
killing program was,
created in the main
parks.
In 1975 the first Arbor
Day ceremony was held
making • it an annual
tradition, involving local
schools where students
participate in • tree
planting as well as in
spring clean-up activities
of park areas. This
tradition , promotes in-
creased awareness of the
town's "green' and clean"
image and reduces park
vandalism. .
During the seventies
Goderich Parks joined
the Ontario Parks
Association and make use
of its advisory services.
Parks Committee
members attend the
annual educational
workshops of the Ontario.
Parks Association every

Perhaps it could be
regarded as'a measureof
recognition of small,
municipalities' parks •
work and. potential that.

A library of parks -
oriented educational
books and other
publications and in-
formation, located in the
office of the Com-
missioner of Works has
been started.
Groups like the Garden
Club and young Green-
thumbers have been
invited to contribute and
participate in the
beautification " of the
town. -
Thousands of spring
flowering bulbs are
planted. All flowerbeds
and containers are
planted by the Parks
crew, to their own
designs. There are now
more than 50 flowerbeds
in town, in varying sizes,
plus numerous containers
at intersections, public
buildings and in "nooks
and corners" all over the
town. There are 54,
hanging flower baskets
on The Square, the
baskets beingdonated by
Art's Landscaping.
The policy of public
meetings prior .to
establishing new neigh-
bourhood parks and then
following the residents'
preferences and
requirements was
established: '

plans for. creating new
parks were introduced
during the seventies .with
much appreciated r-
results. As a contribution
to the 1977 '\Tubil.ee
Celebrations, the jubilee
Park at Highway 8 en-

chitect's plan for the first
time in the system. The
well -used Dawnrose Park
in the Delbar Subdivision
was created•in a. similar
manner and has become
a successful neigh-
bourhood park and
playground. •

revitalization of the core
area, -The Square.
Purple Martin houses
have• -been introduced in
the park areas, an
example of how a
relatively small matter
can be a source of delight
to numbers of residents
and visitors who often
include it in their com-
ments.
A renewed emphasis on
cleanliness in public
areas was' undertaken
during the seventies.
The Parks Committee
also participated in
upgrading the grounds
and related facilities in
-the _Agricultural park --
and helped in turning it
