Vikings end regular
play on listless note

The GDCI senior
Vikings basketball team
had already clinched
second place in the
Huron -Perth Conference
standings before their
final game of the regular
schedule here. last
Thursday.
Their opponents, the
Stratford Northwestern
Huskies, needed a win to
make the playoffs. It was
obvious early in the game
that it meant a lot more to
the Huskies and they
played with much more
intensity than the listless
Vikings.
The Huskies had a 27 -
10` lead at half-time'"and-will now meet Stratford
went on to Win 52 - 24. The
victory gave the Huskies
a playoff berth and
averted the possibility of
their missing out on post -
season play for the first
time in ten years., The
loss left the Vikings with
a record of eight wins and
two losses in regular
season play,
. Bill Hanes scored 26
points to lead Stratford.
John Van Ess added 10
for the Huskies.
Ted Doherty had eight
points to pace the
Vikings_._ Phil Aubin and
Dennis Donnelly each
threw in six while Andy
Moore and Rob
McDonald had•two points
apiece.
Both. the GDCI- senior
and junior Vikings were
eliminated in playoff
action here yesterday
losing in . sudden -death
semi-final action.
In senior action the
Vikings were ',upset by
Seaforth 44-39.., Seaforth
Central in the conference
final.
In junior action the-
undefeated Vikings
dropped a 54-37 decision
tcc�, Stratford Nor-
trirestern who will now
meet Central in the junior
final.

Vikings basketball team
ended their regular
Huron -Perth Conference
season here last Thur-
sday undefeated, winning
48. - 45 over the Stratford
—Nortl7westerrr Huskies.
The. Vikings thus
completed their second
consecutive'9 - 0 season.
Last year's team was
also undefeated in the
regular., -schedule.---- -
Rob Plunket..led the
Vikings both on the
boards and in points. He
had ,30 points and his
rebounding was a
•decisive factor in the
game. Kevin' Adams and
Dennis Aubin . both had
fine games, hooping nine
points ¢ each; , olin.
Alexander and Mike'
--We'dioCk played with
considerable poise and
garnered eight points
apiece. Ben Melick
played effectively in spot
duty, getting four points.
Mike Otto had -16-pnints
for the Huskies and Rob
James hit for 13.

to compete
in OSSA

The GDCI wrestling
team finished in eleventh
place in a total field of 39
schools in the Western
Ontario Secondary
Schools Association
championships held last
Friday and. Saturday at
Saunders Secondary
School in London.
The Vikings had 15
--"Wrestlers competing and
• eight of them made it
through .the first two
elimination rounds.
Three of the Goderich
wrestlers went on to
finish in the top four of
their weight class.
Brian Shewfelt finished
fourth in the 57.5 kilo
class while Chris Black
was third at 61 kilos. Bill
Shewfelt topped the
Viking effort with a
second place finish in the
75 kilo division.
Shewfelt will now
advance-- .to_---.the
Ontario championships
being held this Friday
and Saturday, also at
Saunders.

the OMHA playoffs with a
7-3 win over Stoneybrook
Saturday.
The Stars won the best -
of -three, series in three
games, winning two and
tying one:
The teams tied' 7-7 in
the opening gam e•but the

series following the 7-3
victory, Saturday.
The 'Stars will now
advance to the quarter
finals against
Leamington in a best -of -
five series. The first
game will • go in
Leamington Friday and
the second game will be
at the Godericli Com-
munity Centre. Sunday at
2.30 p.m. Goderich has
the home ice advantage
in the series.
In Stoneybrpok the
Stars trailed after the
first period but rallied
with two goals ° in the
second period and four in
the final period.
Stoneybrook led 2-1
after' one period with
Mike Hodges scoring the
Goderich goal. Goderich
scored the only two goals
of the second period to
take a 3-2 lead into the
final • period. Rob
MacDonald and Larry
Gaynor scored the Stars'
goals.
.The Stars broke the
game open in the final -
period outscoring
Stoneybrook 4-1.
Larry baer and Mike
Hodges scored goals 16
seconds apart to increase
the margin to 5-2 but
Stoneybrook got back in
the -gam with._ a goallate
in the period.
Goderich clinched the
win scoring two goals in
the final •two minutes.
Daer scored his second of
the .period with two
minutes left and Bill
Peters added the final
goal in the last minute.

Roger Lewis assisted
on three Goderich goals.
The next home game
will the 'second game of
the Leamington series
hereon Sunday.

basketball team finished
their Huron -Perth
Conference schedule with
a perfect 10 - 0, won -lost
record here last Thur-
sday by dumping the
home team GDCI Vikings
51-32.
The loss left the Vikings
with a final record of
;eight -wins -and two -losses:
Ray Stock led Nor-
thwestern with 17 points
and Dave Gera had 12.
Paul Pay was the ,
Vikings' top scorer with
14 points. Don McCallum
had eight. Larry Baer
and Dave Gallow each
had three while Paul
McCartney and Dave
More had two points
apiece.
The Huron -Perth
championship was to be
decided here yesterday,
(Wednesday) by means

the GDCI gyms, with all
ten Conference teams
competing.
