A modern parable
t.
BY THE REVEREND
ROBERT O. BALL,
NORTH STREET
UNITED CHURCH
From the very
beginning of time,
mankind has been
seeking in various ways,
to understand more
clearly the mysteries of
the universe, God,
creation, and „ the
meaning of life.
No matter how the
questions are asked, or
how diligent the study or
search to our longings,
the answers are never
simple, or ctlmpletely
clear.
And while we would
like direct answers to our
questions,, Jesus Himself
often shared the
mysteries of Life and its
meaning in the form of
parable or story.
A modern parable
that we are somehow
related to that Other, and
involved in a purpose
beyond ourselves. But •-
where is the vantage
point from which we can
begin to view and un-
derstand it?
This is oftena daily
frustration. We know life
in bits and pieces. We are
able to see, that in spite- of
its glaring flaws, there is
truth, beauty and
goodness which we know
and share. We are
thrilled at the wonder of
birth; we are awed by the
intricate achievements of
science; we are humbled
at the unfathomable
magnitude of the
universe; and while we
may find social, cultural,
and life-style experiences
to be wholesome •and
satisfying, there is still in
us, a longing to un -

^comes from Rouen,
France, where a tourist
was• visiting a famous
cathedral. As he strolled
silently through the
magnifigent:.. edifice,__'
he
admired in -awe the tall
'stately pillars, and the
gracefully curved arches.
He stood in wonder before
the beautiful stained
glass windows, and was
humbled by the intricate
carvings of the pulpit and
altar.
In spite of the glory of
his surroundings, he
continued to feel a vague
sense . of frustration. He
couldn't understand at
first what was causing it.
Then, suddenly it came to
him. No matter where he
stood in that sanctuary,
he 'could not find a van-
tage point from which he
could view the whole
splendour of the entire
cathedral at once.
Expressing this to' the
guide, he was led to the
Baptismal Font. With a
knowing smile the guide
said: "Did , you look in
here?"
The tourist looked, and
to his amazement, there,
in that still small body of
water, smooth as a
mirror, was reflected the;,:
vast sweep. of the whole
glorious interior of the
Cathedral.,
We know something of
the frustration of the
tourist. Mankind has
always known it. There is
a consciousness • of
something beyond what
we see or• what we are.
There is an awareness
derstand the whole
purpose of God..
Is it not here that God,
the great Guide, leads us
to a manger, in which is

revelation of. Himself,
and asks: "Did' you look •
inhere?"
For those who look in"
openess and expectation,
to their amazement, they
shall 'discover 'there,
reflected in human
terms, the heart of God
and the secret to life,
which is Love. . The
Church, calls it the
Incarnation- It is God's
way of showing what our
true. humanity is all
about. 1'
Jesus said: I am come
that you might have life,
and may have it in all its
fullness. LIFE is the gift
of God. Its 'Fullness' is
more than an' extension
beyond the grave, but a
present, 'living reality. It
is that• quality which
touches our daily living,
and gives us a sense of
purpose, a ,unity in the
human family, because it
is a life that is rooted and
grounded in God.
To experience this
FULLNESS of life, we
are invited to accept the
Incarnation of God , in
Jesus, and follow Him in
faithful discipleship, in
obedience to His Way, by
faith,
Jesus aaitl: I AM THE
WAY, THE TRUTH,
AND THE LIFE. HE
WHO COMES TO ME, I
WILL IN NO WAY CAST
OUT.
