SIGNAL -STAR, T RSDAY, FEBR' Ai Raise money.for band exchange The old scoreboard clock at the Goderich and District Memorial Community Centre ticks away to a final countdown after it was replaced with a new scoreboard on Monday, February 11. The new clock will also record penalty times. The $6,400 clock was donated by Tuckey Beverages. (photo by Dave Sykes) First aid training recommended The Ontario Ministry of Health has released a new study on the toll taken every year by home accidents; They led to 895 deaths, took 141,000 people to doctor or hospital in 1.97.7. They cost $141.6 million* in wages lost. The report recom- mends first aid training as an invaluable tool in reducing accidents and keeping damage they do to a minimum. I -t -'s• something S.t. John .Ambulance has been urging for years. And, in fact, the Ministry report presents St. John ex- perience and training - techniques as the success model for„ its recom- mendations because St. John research • in 'in- dustrial first atd training has shown that it seduces on the job accidents by as much as 20' to 40 percent. Although there are no, statistics to prove it, St. John people are con- vinced 'that what works on the job can work off. the job as•well. One of the. ways their ,volunteers use thein training is in carrying the safety message to groups all over Ontario. For•. instance, "Accidents do happen in every family, but most of them can be prevented with a little know how," says Gerald Rober of Bramalea. "And if they do happen, they can be cared for effectively, with a little training." Avoiding the accident to start with, avoing panic, avoiding mishandling that will N. make an injury worse, all those things are as an important a part of St. John Ambulance training as are the first aid skills that can save lives and minimize injuries. ' 'Mr. Cardiff told reporters one of his. first . moves will be to open a constituency office imrriediatfely, likely in the Brussels area, which he said is centrally located so it's about 45 minutes from any place in the riding. He said he wants to offer as good a service as Bob McKinIey gave to the riding and that his constituents will come first. He said he will work both for farmers and in bring industry into the area. He said one Conservative party policy he particularly supported was the ap- prenticeship program since "we want to -keep our young people in the area." In an interview with CKNX after he was ••--deelared-•-th•e--winner in the riding, Mr. Cardiff admitted the' election results "appeared like a horse race for a very long time." • • He said he felt the excise tax and the Tory budget had led to 'the defeat of the party nationally, although in his own campaigning he found many people supported the gasoline excise tax since they felt Canada must become more energy conscious. When it was obvious Mr. Cardiff had won the riding, his supporters in the Brussels arena started celebrating the victory to the music of a local orchestra. Mr. Cardiff, the freshman MP, was already planning his next move- a drive to London on Tuesday to tender his resignation as chairman of the Ontario White Bean Producers' Marketing Board. 1'lll ONE STOP FOR tLLYOUIZ BIOME IMPROVEMENT s MEE DS _ .- _- _-_ t,, r - DO-IT.YOU SELF Plumbing Supplies ' Electrical Supplies Ppint Indoor & Outdoor Painting Supplies Tools Humidifiers De -Humidifiers Your •'Do•it•Yourself Store", for "Do -it -Yourself' ,People. Barney Metric poem Dear Editor, In the current Canadian sweat over metrication I would like to pr,offer the average citizen's feelings in the • following poem. NO;-1VIR. METRIC, YOU AIN'T FOR ME The metric system is quite confusing. To fathom its mess-ups is not amusing. And using decimals in lie u of fractions Leads to the most befuddling reactions. The tables do not directly relate, And so with conversions I sweat and debate. So many times have its standards changed, Forcing the values to be rearranged. I.t can hardly deal, with time whatsoever Because from the second it can't itself sever. And' when it tries to treat. with angles It ties itself in terrible tangles. You cannot use commas, 'but only leave spaces Between .the: thousands, or you'll fall from its graces. 0 0•efl ® .®®®®400000 • FRESH GRADE "A" •• From its rigid structure it cannot unbend, So with hundreds of units I'm forced to contend. And when it comes to subdivision Metric's indigence merits derision__ It only the fat cats' ,cof- fers fills And leaves the public paying the bills. ' Oh, what a nightmare you've proven to be ! No, Mr. Metric, you sure ain't for me! Who needs to be reminded that the multinationals have led the way in metrication and how their big -money influence has wheedled governments into compliance? They want to produce in cheap labor countries to sell in North American markets. The loss of jobs and cost of conversion here, of course, will be cheerfully borne by the consumer who will pay their higher prices under the guise of inflation. I hope you will conclude like me that metrics is a nightmare, and will work,' write Parliament, join us at 'Anti -Metric Canada, and pray for its abolition, • Sincerely yours, Ian B.
