owing to a belated winter,.
held -its first successful
ski meet at Robertson
Tract near Auburn..
About 25 enthusiastic.
members and, friends
turned out, some
equipped with a little
nourishment for the trail.
With fresh snow from Me
night , before, condit1O
were almost perfect fOrt
slipping along on, the
blades at a fast clip.
This writer was not
familiar with the starting
area, used only because a
large parking lot hap-
pened to be nearby. After
crossing an open field and
entering a narrow rough
trail, we came to a gully
with banks at a 90 degree
angle which we had to
cross to reach the main
trail. No one but Batman
could have made it on
skis, so it was everyone
for himself carrying his
equipment by hand.
Any seasoned skier
knows it is humiliating to
accept help on the trail so
I gripped my trusty skis
in one hand and my poles
in the other to make a
determined assault on the
height. I wondered how
General Wolfe and his
troops felt when they
scaled the ramparts of
Quebec on that historic
night, and then it wasn't
in loose snow.
I realty achieved a
couple of yards upward
when my feet slipped.
One ski took off at an
angle and the other in
another direction. I slid
back face down and lay
prone up to my neck in a
drift, still clutching the
poles like a drowning
man clinging to a twig.
Two yduthful rescuers
arrived, collected my
errant skis and movedon
upwards _._.while' ... I...
wallowed in the snow
bank, finally arising like
a hippopotamus from its
mud bath. Somehow I
managed to clamber to
the top on all fours.
From there the narrow
trail continued on
through the bush.

First place remains
undecided as the CHI -IL's
regular season comes to a
close this week. A victory
over Holmesville Wed-
nesday would c1in1 top
spot for Sunset Golf.
Should Holmesville win
the Rockets would then
need _ to ... win their
remaining three games to
earn first place honours.
The playoffs pit one
against four ' and two
against three in the
opening round.
In last . week's action,.
O'Briens Meats closed
out their regular schedule
in third place by losing 7 -
5 to Holmesville on
Thursday and beating
Sunset 7 s 2 on Sunday.
O'Briens' record ends
with 16 wins, 11.losses and
one tie for 33 points.
The Burger Bar also
split two games last
week. Wednesday, they
lost to Sunset 6 - 3 and
then Sunday 'finished
their season with a 7 - 3
victory over Whetstones.
SteNte Buchanan's five
goals in that game, giving
him 29 for the season„ all
but clinched the scoring
title. „flay Volland . of
Sunset is in second place
with 25 .goals and one
game remaining. The
Royals end in fourth
place with a record of 10
wins, 1,5 losses and three
ties for 23 points.
