construction projects has
been lost to Alberta by
Ontario:
Major oil companies,
such as Gulf, Imperial,
Shell and Texaco have
switched development
offices to Calgary from
Toronto which means.. a
$10 million tax loss for
this province. Banks are
moving West at a great
rate. On the Prairies, the
Bank of Montreal is..

• nounced. plans for a $150,
million new building..
Needless to say,
Alberta denies that it is
openly soliciting money,
manpower,_.: and In-
dustrial strength from
Ontario. However, a new
economic development
department has -been
created and branches
have been opened in
Toronto and Montreal,
featuring "Manpower
mobility sections.",, The
Province is "selecting"
companies to relocate
there, seeking industry
and light Manufacturing
of-produets-whielrAL rak-e-
sense to Alberta and the,
rest. of Canada". The
Chairman of Alberta's
booming stock exchange
has said that he "once
told Darcy a y McK sough
(Ontario's former
treasurer) to borrow
money from Alberta to
retool his industries to
compete with us.

I doubt if anyone else in
Ontario finds the
situation funny either.

If you are, a qualified
voter, y you may be en-
titled to time oft' work to
vote in the federal
general election on
February 18•. The Canada
Elections Act states that
each employee must have
four consecutive hours
for the purpose of casting
his•vote. If the hours of
his employment do not
allow for such four
consecutive hours, his
employer shall allow him
such additional time as
may be necessary to
provide four consecutive
hours .
The time -off provision
was 'broadened prior to
the last general election
to include hourly -paid
workers and workers in
all branches of the
transportation industry
(previously only workers
in railways were given
this right).
If you are eligible to
vote, you are entitled to
those four consecutive
hours for voting while the
polls are open between 9
a.m. and 8 p.m. local time
on election day. If this
entitlement means an
absence from your place
of employment, this is to
be arranged at the
convenience of your
employer, but with no
Odduction in. pay or any
penalty. You can, if you
and your employer agree,
waive all or part of the
time off to which you are
entitled.
