The Goderich Ftgure
Skating' Club was
presented yvith a new
trophy at the Club
Competition on Saturday,
February 2. The trophy is
called the "William
Maitland elects new
officers at annual meeting
BY JEAN KNIGHT
• There was a hot time at
the old club., last week! A
great night started out
• with 61 members par-
ticipating in a happy
hour, followed by one of
Debbie's deluxameals.
The Annual Meeting
convened. at 13.:.3.0_with the
addition of 10 - 15 extra
members. After the
address of welcome and
reading and adopting of
last year's. minutes,
Eugene Bender of the
firm Durst, Vodden and
Bender, reviewed the
Financial Statement. He
must have been , very
clear about it, because
even this correspondent
who is not particularly
enchanted with financial
• statements, could follow
itSome .interesting
literature was brought to
the meeting by Mrs.
Helen Young who is a ,
daughter of the late
-Charles Garrow; an -d he
in turn, was the first
president of .the Maitland
-Gb-11— Cliff. This was a
statement of Receipts
and . Expenditures for
1921. What a difference!
It was noted with
laughter that the greens'
keeper received only
$40.00 a month then and
other expenditures were
correspondingly low. Of
course the fees then were
a mere pittance , -
everything is relative.
Reports of the golf,
curling- and tennis bon-
•venors were read and
adopted.' The floor was
then thrown open for
suggestions or ways and
means of increasing
memberships and -or
raising funds. A number
of old and respected
members of the club gave
of their experience and
expertise to suggest ways
to remedy the situation.
Bill Hanly presented
the Nominating. Com-
mittee's report and the
following members will
become the Board of
Directors for 1980: Ron
Takalo, Mary Lapaine,
Arditir Brissette,- Dennis--
Hansen, Ken Hall,
MacEwan Egener, Barry

Coulter.
Shelagh Sully steps
down as President after
two years of hard work
(physical as well as'
mental) and she was
honoured by the Board.
The Poet Laureate of
Maitland -Country Club,
Carol Hunter, had
composed a poem,
lauding Shelagh's
vitures, and pointing out
some of the more bizarre
aspects of her tenure of
office. It was copied out
in beautiful script by
Barry Page and
preseknted to Shelagh
along with a more
tangible expression of the
board's esteem.
After the meeting had
,been adjourned you could
hear one group talking
golf, another tennis, and
yet another discussing
curling, and over all
pervaded an atmosphere
of camaraderie.
'1While-the curling is still
lit'" progress, it won't be
long before we'll see you
on She course, or the
courts. As the poet
Shelley wrote, "If winter
comes, can spring be far
behind?"

• Free Style Skating. This
trophy was donated by
some fisure skaters'
parents - as a com-
memorative trophy in
"Bill O'Neill' name.
The trophy was presented
to the winners by Mr. Ken
Fitzpatrick. Miss Carrie
O'Neill, sister of the late
Mr. O'Ne111, was' present
at the presentation.
• Bill O'Neill was a
gentleman who probably
knew every child who
learned to figure skate or
play hockey in Goderich
during the past 50 years.
He was a familiar figure
at the Arena as he at-
tended nearly all the
skating events. He would
go to the arena to watch
the figure skating -club
members, hockey team
members and also couldn
be seea/ • the public
skating times at the
arena. Many.- of the
children of Goderich will
remember skating with
him and trying to skate as
good as he did. Watching
the children of Goderich
gave Bill some very
happy times.
••
Bill O'Neill was fatallY)
injured in an accident one
month ago. Many of the
children of Goderich
were very sad when they
heard their "most faith-
ful" fan had died. He will
be long remembered as
"the older gentleman
who liked skating."
The, Goderich Figure
Skating Club is very
pleased to accept. this
trophy in memory of
'William O'Neill":
