The "Huhn County
bard of educa.tion
learned Monday that
declining enrolment in
the county elementary
schools won't cost any of
the board's 352
elementary school
teachers their jobs in the
1-980,81 school year. •
The board was told that
enrolraenfpr ojections for
the next school year .
inclicatfd that there will
only.. be 20 fewer students
next year. •The director
noted there were 6,915
students in elementary
schools last year and
prokbeted enrolments
show 6,895 student a next •
year.
Cochrane told the
board it appeared as
though declining_
enroTi--nent had "bot-
tomed out" and that the
elementary school staff
now on the job would be
needed next year.
The director said the
Board allows women to chaperon
BY JEFF SEDDON
'The Huron County
. board of education .was
convinced Monday, that
two women could
supervise a school field
trip adequately and did
not need a male chaperon
to supervise male
students.
The board was-, con-
cerned about teacher
superviston on- a South -
Huron District High
School field trip to
Quebec City- planned for -
May. The trip is for -
senior language students
at the school and has been
an annual excursion since
1968-. -- • -- --
At its January .meeting
- the board felt two female
s-upervi-sbrs-
inadequate for a mixed•
group of students. The
board approved the trip
on the condition that a
male, chaperon be
assigned to go.
Rae Wild, one of the
- female teacher's assigned
• to the trip this year, met
.With the board Monday to
find out why the board
supervisor. -
The language teacher
told the board that it has
been the practice at South
Huron of rotating
supervisory staff for the
Quebec trip. She said that
rotation has resulted in
two females supervising
past trips since there are
two women and one man
in the 'language depar-
tment at the school.
"Could you explain to
me why two women can't
take the trip?" she asked
the board. She said When
twomomen supervised in
the past there were no
problems and wondered
what the concern was
now.
Trustee Shirley Hazlitt
said -the board's concern
had no reflection on the
abilities of the. women
taking the trip. She said if
problems arise there may
be situations where :a
' male _ chaperon '
She pointed
out that there will also be
• ;situations where a female
chaperpn is necessary
and a Male won't do.
"I don't think it's old
fashioned," said Hazlitt.
'Some - -problems—would
be better off handled by
men and some problems
by -women and -I think we
need one of each."
Wild pointed out to the
board that the language
department staff knew
the students, well. She.,
said if the staff suspected
a student would cause
problems that student
"won't go". She said she
was an experienced
teacher and handled the
-stAtclent-s-in-the-claasroom-
on a daily basis.
"If I can't handle them
on a trip I shouldn't be in
a classroom," she told
the board-.
Trustee Dave Gower
toltl-Wtid that the concern
over field trips had
nothing in particular to
do with the Exeter trip to
Quebec. Gower said some -
trustees felt there were
many trips taken that
lacked proper super-
vision. He said the
question arose when
approval for the South
Huron trip was reqpested
which was merely
timing.- He said the
concern was not just over,
the Quebec •trip but field
tirps in general. •
The Goderich trustee
said the board wanted to
take a look at its field trip
policy. He said board
'approval is sought- Tolig
after the trips are
' plannedMaising---
difficult for the board to
question any particulars
of the trip,
"Either our (the
board's) approval 'is
sought early enough for
us to • make change§
-without-difficulty -Cr -the-
necessity for board ap-
proval bedropped," said
- Gower.•
He added the board was
• not concerned with the
• ratio of students to
teachers but with the type
of supervision.
• Blyth trustee John'
• Elliott said. he -had only
one concern over the trip.
He said his concern was
thaf the, female teachErs
• may not always have the
--aocess..46-4nale•-studen• ts
they would to female
when -on the trip.' He said
he was satisfied that
wouldn't be a problem.
South Huron Principal
Joe Wooden told the
board the Quebe'a trip
was, unique from other
-field trips. He pointed out
that. all the students
taking the trip are seniors
and pose little problem
for supervision.
He said taking these
students to Quebec City
was different than taking
a Grade 10 class to
Ottawa.
A field trip. to Ottawa
by a Grade 10 group from
South Huron resutled in
several problems. One
student ended- up being
sent home from the trip.
Wooden told the board
• it would be impractical to
send a teacher from
outside the language
de
. ptm_ arent, He said the
purpose of the trip was to
• do everything in French,
and if a supervisory,
teacher could not speak
the language the value of
the trip would be
lessened.
The board approvedthe-
trip agreeing to permit
supervised by the two
women teachers
