Province will pay for
room costs at centres
Ontario Health Minister Murray Elston
recently announced that. effective .Lan. 1.
people being treated at community -based
addiction treatment centres will have tnc
costs of their room and board paid by the
provincial government.
Clients requiring accununodatlon at a
corrununity-based addiction treatment cen-
tre have had to pay their own room and
hoard in the past. while those admitted to a
hospital for treatment have been fully In.
sured under OHiP.
"To eliminate what f consider to be an un-
fair discrepancy. the Ministry of Health will
now pay 100 per cent of the residential costs
of community-based alcohol and drug addic-
tion programs operating in the province,"
Elston said.
"By providing 100 -per -cent funding for all
community residential programs. we hope
to put the programs on the same financial
basis as the hospital programs "
Four of these are residential facilities that
( urrently rete e ministry funding for treat-
ment servtc sc only. As of ,lan 1, the
ministry willcalso provide them with funds
to cover residential costs. Four other
residential programs that have not
previously received any ministry financial
support will also he fully funded The fun
ding required for these eight residential pro-
grams is expected to he $2 8 million annual-
ly
As many as 1,800 Ontario residents will be
treated at these eight facilities every year
The residential addiction programs will- be
located in Ottawa. Toronto 12). Timmins,
North Bay. Sudbury, Hearst and
7Thamesvillk.
The new policy is designed to ensure that
a comprehensive system of addiction ser-
vices is developed in each community,'
Elston said: "It ensures equal access for all
residents of Ontario to both residential and
non-residential community addiction pro-
grams."
Besides increasing funds for residential
addiction treatment programs, the minister
also announced the ministry will extend fun-
ding to an additional 13 non-residential ad-
diction treatment services. The cost of these
la new programs will be $1.5 million
ibis brings the number of community
based addiction services funded by the
ininl.stry to 83. for a total annual cost of
more than $14 million. The cost of the 21 ad-
diction treatment programs receiving new
or Increased funding this year will be $4.3
nullln'l annually
In addition, new policy guidelines have
been adopted that will set out the re -
quo etnents fur those health care providers
who work in the field of addiction treatment
services. These guidelines will help thein
make more appropriate use of existing
resources: identify gaps in existing ser-
vices: develop the moist appropriate pro-
grams and services for their community:
identify and plan for the special needs of
specific groups and develop a local method
of co-ordinating treatment centres.
