Elevator earnings recover in second quarter Goderich Elevators Limited president, George Parsons, reported in a letter to shareholders that a strong performance in the second half of the company's fiscal year helped to rectify a first quarter loss. The company showed a net profit for the period of $1.33 per share compared to $.75 for the previous year. Improved earnings on investments and the sale of a barge improv- ed the cornpany's position. One of the biggest areas of improvement was in the company's handling of Ontario wheat which reached a record 6.2 million bushels. The wheat was received and ship- ped in a period of just over 10 weeks which, Parsons say's, is an inidcator of the potential of the company's equipment and personnel. Western grain receipts were down 30 per cent. The company reported a net income of $447,052 for the six-month period compared to $253,332 in 1984. Ashley Standard Trust reports profit to Sept. 30 The Standard Trust Company Limited an- nounced that its net income for the period ending September 30, 1985 increased by 24 per cent to $4.7 million from $3.8 million the previous year. During the same period, the net income per commom share increased -to $1.26 compared to $1.06 per share in the first nine months of 1984. Brian O'Malley, Standard Trustco Presi- dent, said third quarter results were par- ticularly encouraging as net income was $1.7 million or $.49 per share compared to $1.2 million or $.35 per share for the third quarter of 1984, The company said that improved results came from increases in mortgage, interest and dividend revenue_ Fee income from mortgage banking services and the management of Greymac Companies had satisfactory improvement as well. Total revenue for the nine-month period increased to $143,683,000 compared to $105; p,U8INESS BEAT 527,000 in 1984. At rSept:. 30 of this year, the company's cash, short-term and marketable in- vestments totalled $184,403,000 compared to $140,$61,000 a year ago. The total assets of the corporation at Sept. 30 were $1,098,321,000. Shareholders have demonstrated support ' by investing dividends in common shares and 60 per cent of dividends paid Oct. 15 or $698,000 wasinvested to purchase 38,600 new common shares. The average number of common shares outstanding increased 13 per cent to 2,834,000 from 2,507,000 in the third quarter of 1984. Bell to market franchise services TORONTO - Bell Canada has announced the establishment of a subsidiary that will market franchise services to telephone answering bureaus in Canada and the United States. ' Named Protocol Message Management Centers, Inc., the subsidiary will start ac- tivity in January. Initially, it will offer franchises existing independently -owned bureaus. It will also work with prospective franchises to establish new bureaus. Commenting on the subsidiary, Bell ex- ecutive vice-president (Marketing) for Bell said that his company can provide the marketing and management resources to help bureaus that might otherwise fail under the pressure of competition, and as well, improve the quality of their operation and value of their services and scope of their market. To become a Protocol franchise, a telephone answering bureau will pay Pro- tocol a one-time fee on entering the agree- ment and an ongoing royalty averaging five per cent of gross revenues of the operation. The franchise package includes IBM - based specially -designed computerized business managements systems that will help bureau owners manage their business more efficiently, as well as local and na- tional advertising, public relations and sales promotion support. Franchise operators will also receive ongoing support in the form of training, operations manuals, market research, referral systems and tracking and accoun- ting systems.
