Top men's teams fight it out for first
I y the time this report goes to press, the
Men's Tuesday Night draw finals will have
been played, but following last week's
games, the two top teams were to have fac-
ed each other in the final game of the first
draw to decide an overall winner.
Jim Bell's team went into the final game
with five wins to his credit and a total of
90% points. His opponent was John Orr,
who had posted a 4-1 record and a total of
721 points. Rodger Moore was in hot pur-
suit, with 721/4 points, followed by Don
Dickie at 623/4 points.
TUESDAY AM LADIES
In the "coffee clatch" curling group,
Anne Kuran defeated Vicki Culbert's team
11-8, while Karen Kirk had her way with
Lynn Edward's team in a 14-1 scrubbing.
MONDAY EVENING
INDUSTRIAL
The Firemen were back in action this
week, after letting the ladies take over last
week, and Keith Crittenden and his
"Ladder -scalers" hosed the Bank of Com-
merce "Prime -raters" by a 7-4 score.
Karen Kirk, skipping Rosemary's team
had some difficulty with the seams and
runs in the ice and let Bill King and his
Book -Worms win his fifth game, by a 5-3
score.
Terry Worsell's "Plungers" cleaned out
Eleanor Erskine and her Road Runners 9-
5, while Ed Mundle, skipping the McGee
team had a close encounter with the
Flowers of Dixies, defeating them 9-8.
THURSDAY NIGHT
Cam Bogie's Forester team kept on the
winning streak (or is it just a mean
streak?) by defeating Floyd Herman's
Teacher team 11-2.
Doug MacKay's V and G team showed a
reversal of form from the previous week
and wound up on the short end of a 15-0
score against Chris Connor and Ns GDCI
ON THE
RDE3
et the Maitland
Teacher team.
The other GDCI Teacher team, skipped
by Doug Bundy, played a nearly flawless
game and managed to defeat Glen
Faikiner's 1863 Union team by an 8-3 score.
In the game that had the Lady Foresters
against the Lady Golfers, it looked like the
Golfers had it in the bag, as they were two
up coming home, but Bernice Moore took
two to send it into an extra end. Even with
last rock, Nancy Nephew couldn't draw
the house, as she came up short, allowing
Bernice to steal two and win the game 10-8.
In the nine o'clock draw, Charlie
Crawford and his Ice Cubes kept up their
winning record as they defeated the Sifto
Salt crew 7-5, while the Hospital team
posted an identical score over Jim Bell's
Legion team.
Mark Jeffrey and his young GDCI team
looked pretty shaky in their game against
Ed's Super Shell team, and allowed them
to take an easy 12-2 victory.
In the closest game of the night, Dan
Durst took two in the eighth with his last
rock to come from behind and defeat John
Orr's Health Unit 7-6.
On the 19th of December, the Thursday
Night crowd are planning some special
events, with the odd -numbered teams
playing at 7 p.m., and the even's at 9.
Teams will be mixed up, according to what
you find in George's pockets, and some
special prizes and hi-jinks are in the offer-
ing.
FAMILY CURLING
On Sunday afternoon, the Brown Fami-
ly, with father Rick, sons Matthew and
Jeff teamed up with John Garrett to defeat
the Zolob baldly 8-3.
Jason Garrett skipped a team with his
mother and sister and one of the Zolob kids
and played against the Stinson family.
That game ended in a 5-5 tie. Family curl-
ing will resume again on January 12.
Durst rink advai.i es to
Windsor regional playoff
This past weekend the Dan Durst team from the Goderich Maitland Curling Club ad-
vanced into the Regional Playdown of the Labatt Brier Tankard.
The team of Dan Durst, Doug MacKay, Don Dickie and Mark Fisher defeated the
Munroe team from Walkerton in a close 6-5 encounter in the final game to take the B-side
championship and win the right to represent Zone 13 in the Regional Playdown in Wind-
sor in January.
In that first game, Dan had to freeze -draw to the opponents counter on the button to
take the end and the win.
Gerald Walter, the Ontario Curling Association zone representative said the competi-
tion was very intense, but our local team "showed they could curl with the best!"
Jets finally win one!
Green Machine becomes Jets'
first recreation league victim
The J.H. Jets finally eliminated the zero
that has inhabitated the team's win col-
umn this season in the Goderich Men's
Recreation Hockey League.
But the zero is no more as the Jets took
advantage of a short-handed Sunset team
to win their first game of the season, 8-6.
With just nine skaters and centre Leroy
Meriam in net for the absent Dennis Kerr,
Sunset was ripe for the winless Jets.
It looked like the same old story as,
Sunset got off to a one -goal lead with Andy
Fowler scoring after six minutes of play.
But it would be the last time the Golf Club-
bers would have a lead in the game.
The Jets responded by putting three
goals behind Meriam to hold a 3-1 after one
period. They increased that lead to 6-2
after two periods of play and withstood a
third period rally in which Sunset scored
three straight goals to pull within one goal
at 6-5, by scoring two goals late in the third
period to clinch the victory.
Paul Schaefer led the Jets scoring binge
with three goals. Team-mate Jeff
Denomme scored two goals while Rick
McLean, Rob Knowles, and Dan Boyce
scored singles. Dale Duncan countered
with three goals for Sunset while Phil Ar-
thur assisted on four goals.
The Jets, boueyed by their first win,
played well in a 9-6 loss to Green Machine
liec. ,. me Learns were uea a -a atter two
periods of play but Green Machine explod-
ed for four straight goals in the final period
to clinch the victory.
Dave Graf and Brian Allen led the
Machine with two goals apiece while Bill
Peters, Hugh Hanly, Tag Sowerby, Rodger
Lewis and Larry Boyce scored singles.
Rob Knowles had three goals for the Jeys
and Paul Schaefer had two.
In a close scoring game Wednesday, a
second period goal by Hodges Millers
stood up as the winner as Hodges defeated
Green Machine 2-1. Green Machine took
the lead in the first period on a goal by
Hugh Hanly but Hodges took over from
there.
In the only league game Sunday, the
Porkers got two third period goals from
Pete Bakker to edge the Clere Vu Rockets
7-6.
The Rockets led 4-2 after one period but
the Porkers outscored the Rockets 3-1 in
the second period to tie the game 5-5
heading into the final 20 minutes. The
Rockets took the lead with a goal early In
the period but Bakker decided the contest
with two goals. He had three goals on the
night.
Big Wayne Draper, Doug Roulston, Paul
Kelly and Dan Duncan each scored one
goal apiece. Brent Daw scored two goals
for the Rockets in a losing effort.
