The Goderich Signal-Star, 1985-12-18, Page 31ucklings kept Martha hopping while down south Everyone should' keep the pictures they took, with their trusty little camera, in an album instead of a dozen little envelopes containing negs and a few snapshots. In looking into one of these little envelopes my thoughts went back a few years when we had a flock of ducklings underfoot all the time. In the park, down south, huge ducks - black and whites - took over and you either chased them or put up with them. My neighbor had a nice bird feeder in his yard but after being bombarded so many times by these huge ducks, both the feeder and the neighbor gave up. These beggars would fly - at a height of five or six feet and try to land on that feeder - or whatever feeder they were attacking that day - and seldom managed to hang on and feed. They hit it broadside and most of the food flew in every direction. Hey, they weren't so dumb - they managed to get the food when the owner wasn't looking. One year -they had 13 to 16 ducklings - cute as buttons and each mother would bring her brood to you and sit and wait for you to feed them. Several mothers had three or more but by the time they were getting their feathers they would all be together with one mother. I don't know if she stole all those ROUND 'N ABOUT about 10 of them, one appeared to be ill. It would eat a little then just sit. There were always one or two who would sit close to it and if they decided to move others would take their place. I couldn't believe how those little fellows looked after the ailing one. This happened just a few days before we were leaving but I've often wondered how many survived With Martha Ret;hburr, since there was an eight to 10 foot alligator in the Phillipe Creek that ran alongside our. park. babies, but -she walked very proudly .at the head of about 16 youngsters. This food finder or leader took them all around the park and our place was their resting place - after they had eaten everything I had. They liked bread and I usually had extra bread getting stale - and Walt would break it into bits. Oh yes there was always a pan of water handy. They'd drink and walk through it and then sit down all over the carport. That isn't all they did all over the carport! They'd sleep and then, I'd tell them to go home. I would have to chase them across the road or they would just settle down again. Each day that they came, there would be one or two missing. By the time there was Students, teachers hold annual party with parents. CLINTON - On December 6, the students, teachers, and pre-schoolers at the Clinton and District Christian School held their an- nual December party with many parents present. The theme of this year's party was Let's Celebrate Books. All classes filed into the school's gym- nasium. Here they found themselves sur- rounded by hundreds of posters displayed on the walls. These posters were the result of a contest held earlier in which each student portrayed a character from a favorite. hnnk The book theme was further carried out in the appearance of the students. Each had arrived in the morning dressed in a costume portraying a character from a book. Throughout the gym one saw animals of every kind. There were dogs, cats, mice and monkeys. Even Dr. Doolittle had graced the party with his presence. Also present were Sherlock Holmes, Alad- din, Old Mother Hubbard, Cinderella and her two step -sisters along with a multitude of other well known personalities. The pupils were welcomed by a long - cared bunny ( a teacher, Mr. Bos) who com-' plimented all the students on their very en- thusiastic participation in both the poster and the costume contest. He welcomed Laurie Erb who took advantage of the day's assembly in order to hand out a number of iwards relating to the Pro -Life Walk-a-thon. Trophies were presented to Trevor and Kevin Schilthuis for doing the distance in the shortest time. Coralie Dykstra received the trophy for being.the youngest walker. As well, the school received the trophy for Best Participation. With these presentations complete, the students sat back with their popcorn to en- joy the animated Walt Disney film, Jungle Book. At interinission prizes were handed out to several students judged to have the best costumes: Kindergarten, Matthew Brooks, ('are Bear; Grade 1, Bernard Ten Pas, Lit- tle Boy Blue; Grade 2, Joseph Boland, Tin Llan; Grade 3, Sandra Vanderlaan, Mary I'oppins; Grade 4/5 Carolyn Jongejan, Alad- din: Grade 5/6, Ben Dykstra, Tin Man: NAIRFDOERSIGN WOMENAND MEN EAR PIERCING AVAILABLE Grade 7, Dawn Ten Pas, Jezebel; Grade 8, Jeremy Jongejan, Ingeborg Van Eeden, Robin Hood and Missy. Prizes were given for the best posters and when that was completed, drinks and snacks were handed out and the remainder of the film was shown. At 2:30 p.m. pupils returned to their classrooms where first term reports were handed out, desks were cleaned up, and pupils were dismissed for the weekend - hopefully stimulated to read some good books. Well, I hope I haven't bored you with my ducks - probably when we get there this year there will be only half a dozen or less - but the mamas will be nesting in the flower beds or any dark corner available and they will start a new season of little ones - and I'll feed them and chase them again - and enjoy them too. I'm funny that way. I think you'll like to know that my grand- daughter has been resting, getting all the pain pills out of her system and will be back to London on the 16th. Her sister told me she has really changed. "She's a Fighter Grandma, and she is look- ing and feeling like a different person." This was Marty who talked Marguerite into get- ting a "second opinion" and I can only pray that she is right. Both these girls loved Goderich when they were little. "Greet" is the one who with another friend made all the pies, six I think, for her Grampa Walt. The cherries were the sour kind - and they had left out the sugar! None of us will forget that vacation! Another time there were about four of the family and they walked across the river to Saltford with some new friends - and lost their shoes in the fast water! They have a lot of memories - and I love them all. Now, they are all grown up with families of their own - but I don't get to know these little guys as I did their mothers and dads. I hope to see them next week. So, I hope your Christmas is happy. I will be thinking of you. Love, Martha.
