Wednesday' Dec. 11. 'Sherri ,TaIIbot, the.
Master of Ceceanonies,~ kept the . coneeert
moving at aiively pace.
The concert opened with the Primary
Choir. This group of very talented
youngsters was followed by the
Kindergarten class who always steal the
show.
The Grade 1 students, presented the Night
Before Christmas. They were followed by
the Grade 3 class who had produced a slide
presentation. Grade 2 told about the Jesus
Tree.
The French Club presented Christmas
Around the. World. Grade 5 presented a play
called Winnie the Pooh Saves Christmas.
Grade 4 then did a skit called Santa's
Christmas Eve. The grand finale was the
Senior Choir.
The variety displayed by the classes was
appreciated by the audience. Special thanks
to Mrs. Hazlett who coordinated all of the
music and to Mrs. Arlene Darnsbrough who
came that night to play the piano.
Between classroom presentation some of
Mrs. Darnsbrough's piano pupil entertained
the crowd. These talented musicians includ-
ed Jana Harman, Heather Zurbrigg, Cojan-
na Bond, Pam Armstrong, Karin Millian
and Shannon Millidn.
This week the pupils at Colborne are lear-
ning the true meaning of Christmas. Each
morning they have been assembling to sing
carols and place cans of food under the
Christmas tree. These gifts will be turned
over to the Salvation Army for distribution.
On Thursday the pupils are being treated
to a Disney film for doing such a fine job and
on Friday the entire school is going skating
thanks to the generosity of the Goderich
Recreation Committee.
Grade 6 pupils are continuing their work
with Records. They have mastered short
songs using the notes B,A,G and C.
The classroom is abuzz with Christmas
activities. Christmas stockings have been
filled with words made from "MERRY
CHRISTMAS."
They have compiled a list of Christmas
words and have been using them to play
Seasonal Bingo.
Grade 3 students at Colborne have been
busy learning about geometric shapes. Last
week they learned about cubes, prisms,
pyramids, cones and cylinders. They then
constructed these shapes and made a
mobile out of them. This week they are star-
ting their multiplication tables.

Christmas in the presentation of The Missing Signs of Christmas Caper at the Brookside
Christmas Concert, December 17. The play was presented by the children in Greg Hazlitt's

Santa Claus should not replace Christ

A group of Civil Libertarians have in-
itiated legal action under the provisions of
the new constitution to eradicate religious
instruction from the public school system.
Personally, I see this as a sad comment on
our times. Many seem to have forgotten that
our society is rooted in Judaeo-Christian
ideals. This is a fact of our democracy.
Our county was founded by devout,
religious people; we are their inheritors -
reaping the benefits of a community forged
on the principles of morality, truth, justice,
humanity and love of God and the land.
Surely it can be possible to recognize and
appreciate cultural mosaic in the classroom
without destroying traditional religious ex-
pression and it is not time to wipe out Sec-
tion 235 (1) C of the Education Act that
states that one duty of our teachers is: "to
inculate by precept and example respect for
religion and the principles of Judaeo-
Christian morality and the highest regard
for truth, justice, loyalty, love of country,
humanity, benevolence, sobriety, industry,
frugality, pruity, temperance and all other
virtues."
While a humanist - though secular - ap-
proach to instilling moral values in our
youth may be broad enough to embrace all
religious thinking ( though I doubt it myself
it will lack richness of expression.
I would be the first to admit that religion
in the school, as it is now presented, is not a
profound or weighty experience. I agree
that this is as it should be. Most parents
would be uneasy if teachers were expoun-
ding doctrine that may, or may not, reflect

the family's denominational viewpoint.
However, I fail to see how exposure to
religious thought, the Lord's Prayer and the
Christmas pageant can be anything but a
positive experience for most children.
( Provision is made for children whose
parents do not wish their children exposed
to then ' concepts. )
Full-scale denial of religious expression in
our schools will cut into the quick of our in-
heritance. It is wrong to ask us to make this
sacrifice. From my point of view, this will
be a grave disservice to the majority of
children who currently benefit from Chris-
tian celebration.
I hope that Santa Claus has not replaced
the Christ Child in Christian hearts and that
the true treasures of the season - love, hope
and charity - are yours as I wish every one
of you a very Merry Christmas.
