Wood or coal -burning stoves and furnaces can be an economical way to heat your home. And there's no better way to take the chili off a winter evening than a cosy fire. But wood heat is not like central heating - you can't just set the thermostat and relax. If these wood and coal -burning units are not installed and maintained properly, they can he a safety hazard. With about 2.5 million Canadian homes us- ing wood heat, there has been a dramatic in- crease in the number of stove -related home fires. Here's a sample of some of the safety tips you should know. Buy a certified appliance and follow in- stallation instructions, placing a protective staitlon the wall if clearances are reduced. A metal -covered insulating material, placed under the stove, will protect the floor from sparks. Flue pipes should be short, well -fitted, supported, sloped up toward the chimne and located at least 18 inches from com- bustible materials. ('reosote, a by-product of slow -burning wood, builds up on the flue lining and in chimney cracks. When ignited, it can pro- duce an extemely hot fire. To keep ac- cumulations to a minimum, maintain a briskly burning fire with well- seasoned wood. Before the heating season begins, have the entire solid fuel heating system in- spected to make sure that stove or furnace, chimney connectors, joints and chimney flue are clean and in good repair. Equip your home with smoke detectors so you and your family will have an early war- ning of a fire. Install a fire extinguisher near your stove and be sure it's ready for action in case of emergency. Would you like your stove installation checked for safety? Ask your local fire department if they provide this service.
