He expects that if the weather co- operates, he will be able to observe the comet with the naked eye from a friend's farm just north of Goderich and he eagerly anticipates the opportunity. Halley's Comet is one of between 20 and 50 billion comets whose eclipse brings it near the earth once every 75 years. Astronomers can calculate the time it will take the comet to return to view from the earth because they know the size of its eclipse. Named for the British astronomer who first calculated when it would reappear, Halley's Comet is the only comet whose return can be predicted. Greater comets appear suddenly because their eclipses cannot be determined and there reutrn cannot be predicted, says Louis. Depending on the closeness of a comet's eclipse to a larger planet, the comet ac- celerates or retards it travel speed. By the time Halley's Comet comes closer to the sun it gets bigger, the nucleaus gets bigger and the tail gets longer as it pulsates. Because the earth is fairly close to the sun, this accounts for the long tail on the cornet as it gets close enough to be observed with the naked eye. The one thing about astronomy, says Louis, is that our technology will not change the basics. The planets are locked into their orbits and not even our fastest rocket in space can change the solar system. The students were told they could observe the comet during the month of January and again in March before it disappears for another 75 years. (Photo by Sharon Dietz) While our fastest rocket travels 25,000 miles per hour, the speed it takes to leave the gravitational pull of the earth, comets travel at 18 miles per second or 64,800 miles per hour. The enormous speed of the cornet would destroy a planet if a comet collided with a planet but Luois says there is no danger of Halley's Comet colliding wit"' the ('rlr$' rl'hn r•mmt 'lrinrnanhnc in different orbit on a different plane which avoids collision with planets. "Out in space there is an excellent traf- fic system," says Louis. "Even without computers, there is a fantastic order to things." It is Louis's hope that the return of Halley's Comet and the publicity surroun- ding its appearance will interest young people in astronomy. He would like to see young people become much more impress- ed with what the sky is offering. Louis spoke to children at Victoria School last week when he told thein, today's children are so absorbed in television and video games that they do not observe the world around them. Louis travelled to an observatory in Len- ingrad and another on the border of Turkey and Iran ih 1981 to attend lectures and symposiums on astronomy. In 1982 he observed the eclipse of the sun from nor- thern Saskatchewan and just last spring he took a tour of Spain and Morocco and had the opportunity to observe the sky from the Sahara Desert. "The conditions are so predictable out in the desert. There are only a few days when you get clouds or rain," ` says Louis. "It was absolutely fantastic." The desert is so hot during the day and then so cool in the evening that it seems the sky is even clearer at night. "The view was absolutely. tremendous." Presentation at MacKay concert outlines pioneer museum proposal The variety concert at MacKay Centre for December was arranged by Isabel McDonald. Irla Stewart led in singing two Christmas carols with Joan Henwood at the piano. Herb Bridle introduced Rev. Crocker who spoke on Halley's Comet. This comet only corms in view every 76 years and will not be as visible in our area as it was in 1910. The head of the comet is like a dirty snow ball containing gases, gravel and dust. As it ap- proaches the sun the tail begins to grow longer. There have been too many clouds for area people to view the cornet. so far. A pair of binoculars is just as useful to see it as a telescope. He spent 12 years with the Royal Ontario Museum and came to (;oderich from Southampton. In his open- ing remarks, Breed payed tribute to Herbert Neill who in 1948 sold his collection of antiques to Huron ('ounty for $4,000 on the condition that he would be the curator. This display was set up in the old Central School on North St. in Goderich. Mr. Neill lived in the school for a few years until the log house was moved from Bluevale and placed beside the school. Funding is now in place and plans are under way to tear down all existing buildings except the old school house. Breed gave a visual description of how the building will look when finished. The locomotive engine has to stay in place, streets and shops will be built around it. The next four years are going to be a very dif- ficult task to have the museum open with construction going on at the same time. Breed was thanked by Isabel McDonald for his excellent presentation. The group is looking forward to a new museum in town. To conclude the program, carols were sung interspersed with Bible readings about the birth of ,Jesus by Katinka Dorrance.
