After Five Club hears
former skater Speak
On November 26 the Goderich and District
After Five Club held its annual "Fall Fair"
to help raise money for missionaries. Over
$400 was raised and everyone's contribution
was greatly appreciated.
Vicky Hackett's lovely voice was enjoyed
by all present.
Speaker was Winona Gehiere a former
professional figure skater and teacher.
Winona joked about her experience as a
wallpaperer since she has moved 15 times.
She stated that she had a beef -stew mar-
riage in that her husband was always beef-
ing and she was always stewing. Winona ex-
plained how sin is knowing to do right and
not doing it.
She was busy telling God how to answer
her prayers and then she learned that God
changed her and she did some things she
didn't want to do, but she knew she must.
Her husband's terminal illness has, of
course, brought about changes in their life-
style and she is now helping him with his
business.
Winona's pleasant attitude was a lesson
for everyone.

In Advent and Christmas the writer has
been trying to see a completed story, a full
picture of the Atonement. It is an attempt
not to be isolated into one season, but to
grasp the entire meaning of the Coming of
Jesus Christ. We can only start with the
Creation for Creation and Redemption are
always miter -related.
Thus, we begin at the Beginning. We hear
of the Dago Dei, the image and likeness of
God, and we read, "And God breathed into
the nostrils of man, and man became a liv-
ing soul." The life that we possess is a gift
from God, and this gift relates us ir-
revocably to God. We are His by right.
When I ponder this a verse from Job leaps
to mind, "What the Lord hath given, the
Lord also taketh away." This means, for
me, that the gift of life must return at
sometime to God. God is life, and all that ap-
pertains to life must find its source in God.
This applies to the human being.
This brings us into the context of sin. We
are, by nature, rebels in the vineyard of
God. Our sin is an affront to God. We may
lose our love for our Creator, but our Maker
does not lose His love for us. John, in his
first little letter, tells us, "God is love." God
does not, and cannot, change so we conclude
that God is ever love.
This, then, brings us into the
perspective of the Messianic Promise. In
Isaiah's prophecy we read of The One Who
Will Come (Ch. 9). This heralds the oncom-
ing reclamation act of God, Father and
Creator. This is borne into reality in the per-
son of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We celebrate His Coming in Advent and at
Christmas. He is come to be our Saviour. We
cannot save ourselves; our salvation must
come from outside ourselves into ourselves.
In His love God prepares Himself to come to
us, to all who are lost. This is the message of
Advent and Christmas.
We, then, find ourselves on the pilgrim
road as we pursue the Christ's missionary
journey. We are present at Bethlehem's
manger; we stand with shepherds. We are
viewers of the miracle. We understand the
angels, "All praise to the Highest, and on
earth peace, goodwill toward all." Then,
step-by-step, we move out into life, His life,
the simple carpenter's shop, the trip to
Jerusalem and His meeting with the doctors
of the Temple.
"Do you not know, I must be about My
Father's business?" We are by Jordan's
shore when He meets John the Baptist, and
we enter into the water with Him. We hear
in our hearts the voice of God, "This is My
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
We are on our way to the completion of the

greatest story ever told. We hear parables
that astound; we are in the human throng
when men and women are healed. He tells
us of The Prodigal Son and The Good
Samaritan, and commends their example to
us. In quiet moments He takes His disciples
aside and instructs them; when they do not
understand He says to them, "Have faith." I
like to think of Him gazing deeply into their
eyes, perhaps His hand upon a human
shoulder, saying, "Trust Me." This is the
only way - trust Him !
The Cross rears up ugly and real: Hen-
dricus Berkhof calls Calvary "the reconcil-
ing ground of God." It is there that the price
of sin is paid. It is a ransom price, paid for
us. We must be there that day on Golgotha.
We must hear His voice proclaim, "It is
finished!"
No wonder the night in Gethsemene was
so arduous. We see Him enter death for us
that "the final enemy" might be defeated. It
is finished!
This is all seen as we stand in the midst of
Advent and Christmas. It becomes im-
mensely personal, He actually died for me!
We have a Christian concept on this: God
looked away in the hour of His death. Im-
agine - the utter loneliness of the Son, His
absolute God-abandonedness.
God did look away for God cannot look
upon sin. He allowed His Son to take upon
Himself our sin. It appeared an utter defeat.
Is this the end? Is this what He was striving
for? Did the Father really look away? Will
we ever understand the magnitude of His
passing?
Consider the disciples after Calvary and
their sense of complete routing. Their
sadness is immeasurable. Can God do
anything for us now? This is where the full
story holds firm for we have a divine answer
to all our questions. Yes, God did do
something, and it is within the Doctrine of
the Holy Trinity that help comes. God is
love, and God will do something.
According to Jurgen Moltmann in his
"Theology of Hope" God sends the Holy
Spirit down into death to retrieve the Son
and to open up to every eye the Resurrection
of the Son. "He is risen," becomes the
Message of Christendom.
The full story of the Atonement is un-
folding perfectly, even in Advent and at
Christmas. "I am come that they might
have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly." Afterwards comes the Spirit
upon us, "ffor 'I ;am Opt you always," and
this, too, la in and through us at Advent and
Christmas.
The full; story is the spirit of Advent and
Christmas. If we seek sincerely to respond
then it must be in terms of faith and trust.
Can there be another way?
