playing pool
Fh'slt T brant to tell you gals to be careful
whenyirt p1»nb up ,on things, like standing
ori a bath towel on the'sideof-the tub. When
you reaOli nut, sure as guns that towel is go-
ing -to sl p and you're liable to split your
head• wide' open. So mark this down with
your no -no's. That's all I have in the advice
department.
I had hoped T would get a chance to play
shuffleboard this summer. I like the game.
In Florida during the winter as soon as the
sun dries off the Shuffleboard Court people
are ready to , get going. About 9 a.m. or
earlier you'll find people waiting for part-
ners and they are ready to blast off — and I
mean blast! There's no fooling around and
everyone is geared up to lick the tar out of
their opponents. This peps you up for the
Whole day! Great therapy, helps your
Rheumatics and other aches and pains -
they say!
11 you like to play pool you'll enjoy shuffl-
ing - since you will be trying to touch your
disk in the right way to take out their disk
and perhaps sneak behind another of their
discs, where they can't reach you. It can be
just as big a thrill as playing at a pool table
that's why most of the men are such good
shufflers. So many women won't even talk
about pool. It is kind of hopeless trying to
convince one that she would enjoy playing
pool as much or more than shuffleboard. I
didn't need convincing.
Years ago when the Air Force was at Clin-
ton, we were at the Sergeants' Mess nearly
every Saturday night. In the interim before
the party got started the boys - ours - were
teaching us gals to play pool. We got to
where we didn't lose points for our partner,
then later the Base was closed and our
friends were sent all over Canada.
Down South, a year or so ago a pool table
was established in our rec. room and when
no one was around I would practice getting
the table cleared - all by myself! Then the
"Boys mama me to play - teaching as we
played. Good sports.
So, soon I was asked to play. "Get your
cue, Gal," someone would say - and we all
enjoyed the game. The older men were real
challengers and made you keep your mind
on what you were doing. I had a few nights
when I was lucky and cleared off several -
(three is a good several) and the guys would
all cheer. The women in the next room, play-
ing Tiddly-winks - or Bingo would dash out
to see what had happened.
For two winters I was the only female
playing pool. Last year when we arrived
there, I found about three girls had been
practicing and one was real good. So I felt a
lot better about "playing with the boys!"
But it was fun. Guess I'm braver than most
women - at some games, but the years are
starting to make me act more prim and pro-
per - if possible. So gals, if you get the
chance to learn, then DO it. I'm sure as soon
as you get the general idea you will be happy
to play pool whenever you can.
Did you hear that nice newscaster, Mort
Grimm, put in a personal observation - as he
called it. Looking up towards the ceiling he
said, "Lord, slow me down that I may see
the flowers and smell their fragrance—." I
didn't catch all he said but it made you stop
and think and LOOK. We are so busy in our
own little mud puddle, that we forget to look
around - or UP.
One afternoon I looked at the sky and sud-
denly realized I had never seen anything
like it before. The clouds were lined up in lit-
tle narrow strips like blue and white ribs.
There was two sections above us - almost ex-
actly alike - side by side. Fantastic. I watch-
ed for some time as they drifted slowly from
my sight - but what a sight. I'll never forget
it. Now I'm more observant. Who knows we
may just see Halley's Comet by looking up
oftener.
Have a care, try to be happy.
