"Kids your age are most likely to die during the next 10 years in car accidents. And, 50 per cent of those accidents will be caused by drunk drivers," he said. "You'll all be put in the situation where you're in a car and the driver's drunk. What do you do? It's a tough thing to say no, but you have to do it," he added. Marijuana, cocaine, LSD and heroin were among the illegal drugs discussed by the class. Dr. Rourke said peer pressure is one of the most important reasons people use these drugs. "People smoke marijuana for much the same reasons as they use tobacco and alcohol. It tends to make you not care about things and you don't do as well at school. A lot isn't known about marijuana but it can slow your thinking down," he said. To combat peer pressure, Dr. Rourke and members of the class said they could walk away from the situation, realize the people pressuring them are not friends and realize they should look after their bodies. "No one should be able to make you do things with your body you don't want to do. You've got one body and you should look after it," he said. Illegal drugs are particularly dangerous because their contents could contain im- purities. "If you're taking drugs from your local pusher, you could get impurities such as arsenic or lead mixed in the drugs. Drugs are expensive to make but are less expen- sive for the posher 1f they're. mixed with other things," he said. r From his experience with emergency and his private practice, Dr. Rourke said he's seen less use of illegal drugs and a greater use of legal drugs over the past six years.
