Recent rule changes, sanctioned by the Ontario Minor Hockey Association and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association have introduced per- missive body contact to the pee wee age group. This follows an earlier change which sanctioned a similar regressive step for bantams. Many parents and coaches see this as a regressive move. The requisites for being an effective player seem to place brute strength as a priority over skating skills, stick -handling and teamwork. Wide dif- ferences in the physical size and develop- ment of this age group also creates a signifi- cant safety hazard. When the pre -pubescent four footer collides with the gangling six footer, the results are not amusing. As this season of minor hockey unfolds, the games I'm watching verify growing ag- gression and negative competition. It's not "cute"; it's "sick"! The rules should be changed. If parents will join me and others who are voicing similar displeasure, they will be changed. You can help by urging concerned parents and others: 1. to contact their Minor Hockey Association President; 2. to write their local newspaper to publicize the concern; 3. to call their local radio call-in show; 4. to write their M.P.P. ; 5. to write the OMHA President at: 1925 Bishop St., Unit 6, Cambridge, Ontario. N1R 6J9. 6. to write the CAHA President at: National Office, 333 River Road, Vanier, Ontario. K1L 8H9. 7. to contact their local hockey coach about immediate abuses of physical aggression; and 8. to call me in Seaforth to add their names to a brief for submission to the OMHA. I am convinced - through contacts made during the last month - that a majority of parents want these regressive rule changes removed. It's an error to assume that nothing can be done. Let's take some positive action to initiate some constructive change on behalf of our children! Sincerely, Paul Carroll, P.O. We strongly believe that a healthy lifestyle not only increases enjoyment of life but helps prevent illness. A healthy lifestyle has many components such as rest, diet, control of stress, and of course exercise. For many people of all ages, swimming is an ideal form of exercise. A recreation complex including an indoor swimming pool would be very healthful for a large proportion of the population. A sampling of those who could benefit include: - teens, adults, and senior citizens who can keep fit at their own individual activity level; - children learning to swim, both individually and through the physical education component of the school system; - people with medical or other reasons that preclude other forms of exercise such as jogging; - people with diseases or disabilities such as arthritis where maintaining joint movement and muscle strength is important. A recreation complex thus would be a Alcoholics Anonymous permits members to choose their belief Dear Editor As I have moved from Goderich I do not see the Signal -Star on a, regular basis, however, I picked up a two week old copy and was reading the letter to the editor from the lady who had found our Lord who saved her from alcoholism. I was both surprised and shocked to hear the remarks from the lady who has found the Lord would run down A.A., and try to run other lives as her own. A.A. is a spiritual program that lets you believe in a God of your understanding and teaches as the Bible does to live and let live. I have seen many men and women come in- to A.A. who could believe in nothing and go on to be good Christians with firm belief in a Higher Power. It is sad to see and hear people who have found this try to force their will on others. If this was allowed to happen we would all become zombies or clones. After all we are only perfectly human, not humanly perfect. As the Lord said "To err is hurhan." That is why anonymity is a large part of A.A. We do not have to brag about our help but let our actions show it. A proud member of A.A. What a GREAT Gift Idea! It seems ludicrous indeed that 90 per cent of the adult swimmers now attending Vanastra seem to be from the town of Goderich and I am sure there would be many more if not for the distance.
