BY SHARON DIETZ Vandals have stolen more than $60 worth itAristfas lights from the displays in Q rt House Park since the park was decorated for this year's' Christmas de' tam- According o :According to Goderich's tourism pro- moter, Robin Stuart, 265 bulbs have been stolen from the park making it an unfor- tunate situation. Money to buy more str- ings of lights is being spent to replace the stolen bulbs, says Stuart who adds the in- divduals involved are not examining the work, effort and money that goes into a display like this. Stuart points out that the town and local merchants have invested more than $8,000 in the project which they hope will be a source of enjoyment to the community as well as a tourist attraction. "After much hard work, it is dishearten- ing to see a few people take away from that," says Stuart. Some of the people on the Christmas lights committee have been involved right from the start of the project five years ago. Goderich Police Chief Pat King points out that stealing Christmas light bulbs is an offence just as the theft of $1,000 is an of- fence. A young offender has been charged with theft of a spotlight from a Christmas display on private property in town this Christmas season, he notes. King' says the public should report tnyone seen hanging around the Court House Park if they think they mightbe.up to mischief. He also suggests parents speak to their children about the.cost of the displays and the work that has been put in- to: the project, impressing upon them to leave the lights alone. King says most young kids steal the lights on , a dare without realizing it is theft and an offence they could be charged for. King points out it isn't only young children and teenagers who are stealing the lights but older "kids; ' in their early twenties as well. There is also an odd chance there might be a faulty connection in one of the lights and a child could geta shook, adds King. n1; REAYRNIpTI 'r Not long '*111 Christspits!
