Nurse scores four goals
for midgets in losing effort
The Goderich Legion Midgets hosted a
mighty St. Marys team last Saturday and
came out on the short end 11 - 5.
Goderich knew they were m for a tough
match and as expected St. Marys came out
flying, scoring in the first two minutes. They
scored two more before Goderich got on the
board on a goal from Matt Wilkinson on a
shot from the blue line. He was assisted by
Darrell Durnin.
But Goderich was not done yet and they
opened the scoring, fifty-eight seconds into
tale second period as Rod Nurse scored his
first of four goals. Jim Beattie and Durnin
received the assists.
Goderich had trouble with St. Marys as
they scored four, making it 7 - 2. But again
they fought back, this time to -within two,
wnen Nurse scored his next two, with good
passing .fromboth Durnin and Culbert who
assisted on the two goals. Rod still did not
give up as he opened the scoring in the final

period, ripping a shot by the goaltender
when he received a pass from Neil Rodger.
St. Marys responded to Nurse's effort as
they scored four final goals to extinguish
any Goderich comeback.
Goderich played a good, strong game as
they surprised St. Marys with hard hitting
while only taking six penalties.
Goderich was dealt an injury blow when
Jim Beattie was hit during the game and it
was later diagnosed as a broken collar bone.
Unfortunately, Goderich's injury list con-
tinues to grow. Goderich plays next Satur-
day before travelling to St. Marys next
Wednesday.
Atoms lose to Clinton but defeat
St. Marys 3-0 in league play
The Goderich Machinist Atoms split a
pair of games last week losing an exhibi-
tion game to Clinton 5-3 Thursday and re-
bounding with a 3-0 win over St. Marys in
Shamrock League playjiere Saturday.
In the game Thursday, Clinton scored
two goals in both the first and second
periods and coasted to the 5-3 victory.
Goderich led in the game scoring the
first goal after four minutes of play as
Paul Wheeler converted a pass from
linemate Chris Dickson. Clinton scored
two goals in a 30 -second span to carry a 2-1
lead into the second period.
Goderich tied the game at two early in
the second period on a goal by Jared
Whalen with Jamie Stanley assisting. But
Clinton responded with two straight goals
to lead 4-2 after two periods. Each team
scored one goal in the final period.
Wheeler scored his second of the game for
Goderich.
The team responded in league play here
Saturday scoring one goal in each period to
defeat St. Marys 3-0. Whalen scored what
proved to be the winning goal at 5.44 of the
first period with Todd and Chad Papple
assisting. Chad Papple increased the
Goderich lead to two goals midway
through the second period- with Whalen
assisting and Bill Ingham scored an in-
surance goal early in the final period.
Chuck MacLennan earned the shutout in
the Goderich goal. This Saturday the
Atoms will host Dorchester ,in Shamrock
League action.
Goderich Novice Bs defeat
Bayfield 4-0 in exhibition play
The Goderich Novice B team scored two
goals in the opening two minutes of the
game and coasted to a 4-0 win over
Bayfield in exhibition play here Saturday.
Steve Linklater scored on an unassisted
effort in the first minute of play and his
goal turned out to be the winner. Jeremy
Powell increased the home team's lead to
two goals with an unassisted effort less
than one minute later.
Goderich put the game out of reach scor-
ing two goals in the second period. Bran-
don Corriveau scored at 7.25 and two
minutes later Steve Clarence scored the
fourth unassisted Goderich goal.
Novice B goaltender Robin Adams was
in goal for the shutout.
Garb and Gear Novices play
well despite 3-1 loss to London
The Goderich Garb and Gear Novices
were stymied by a hot London goaltender
and were eliminated in the second round of
the Seaforth Tournament on the weekend.
The novices played well in both games,
defeating Orangeville 6-2 in opening round
action before dropping a 3-1 decision to the
Southwest London Major Atoms Saturday.
Goderich was full value for its win
against Orangeville in the opening round
as they lead 3-1 after periods and
outscored the opposition 3-1 in the final
period to clinch the 6-2 victory.
Jason Meriam and Len McLarty led the
Gears offence with two goals apiece.
David Lumley and Trevor Macaulay
scored one goal each for Goderich.
Despite a solid team effort in the second
game, Goderich outshot London but came
out on the short end of a 3-1 score. London
scored single goals in both the first and se-
cond periods to hold a 2-0 lead heading into
the final period of play.
Goderich finally solved the goaltending
mystery midway through the final period
as Lumley scored on an unassisted effort
to reduce the deficit to a single goal.
Goderich failed to score the tying goal and
London added an insurance goal late in the
game.
The Garb and Gear Novices will host
Dorchester in a 4 p.m. contest here Satur-
day and will play St. Marys Sunday.
Lions settle for 3-3 tie
The Goderich Lions Pee Wees and St.
Marys hooked up in a battle of two evenly
matched teams and the outcome was a 3 - 3
tie.
St. Marys struck first scoring the only
goal of the first stanza. However, with just
fourteen seconds gone in the second period,
Lane's back hander from close in with Tim
Harrison and Lonnie Rurnig assisting even-
ed the score at one. Two minutes after this
goal, Lions fell behind again by one goal and
this was the way the second period ended.
In the third period, Andre Cauchi tucked
in the puck from the side of the goal on an
unassisted effort that tied the contest. At the
five minute mark' of the period Paul
Hamilton shot from the top of the circle,
eluded the opposing goalie giving Goderich
a 3 - 2 advantage. Andre Cauchi assisted on
the goal. But, with four minutes left the
Lions were caught flat-footed on a 5 on 3
situation and St. Marys scored the final goal
of the game. Pat Donnelly, the Lion goalie,
had to be sharp, especially in the last minute
of play as the Lions were two men short.
Lions next outing will be this Saturday as
a strong Dorchester club visits Goderich.
Goderich Chess Club results
There were a series of studious games
played at the last Chess Club meeting,
especially the match between Doug
Brindley and Eric Hallarn. After much give
and take involving many major pieces,
Doug managed to get the upper hand to win
the game.
Whilst Walter Gottschalk waited patiently
in the wings, Barry Page and Dennis Luiting
played some aggressive chess in their two
official games. Dennis came up with several
strong moves, and the end game hinged
upon having the right chess piece in the
right place. The promotion of Barry's pawn
to a queen tilted the balance in his favour to
conclude the first game. The second game
saw Barry's queen -rook combination pro-
vide the coup -de -grace. Doug and Walter
chalked up additional victories to their
score sheet.
Despite a small turnout, there was cer-
tainly some enjoyable chess played. The
