(Photo by Fred Bisset) It's a hard, fast and frustrating world Martha Dear friends: This will probably shock you, but you don't have to worry any more about me be- ing lonely, for I now have four new men in my life. Please read on. You are possibly acquainted with some of them: I get up in the morning with Charlie Horse, I spend all day with Arthur Itis and I go to bed with Ben Gay. The fourth is a bit of a pro- blem. His name is Will Power. Have you noticed the papers are using very fine print or type, lately? One can scarcely read it, it is'so small. And there is no sense asking anyone to read it for you as they all speak so low I can barely hear them. Also it seems everything is farther away than it used to be. I've given up running for the bus - it is so much faster than it used to be. I swear! And now, I find it is almost impossible for me to reach my shoe laces. How frustrating!! People are changing too! They are much younger than they used to be. On the other hand people my age are much older than I am. Why just last week I ran into an old classmate - she had changed so much I hardly knew her. I got to thinking about her, the poor thing, while looking in the mirror, and do you know they don't even make mir- rors like they used to! It's a hard world! It is also a fast world. Things are advanc- ing so rapidly that the little tots know more about the changes than us grownups do. Watching Michael Knight with Kitt and the magic things they can do to keep in touch, nearly scares me to pieces. Is there no privacy any more? How can they use those computers and other great electronics to talk to each other or get information on people, in no time at all, when it used to take days, then hours, to do it? Right after all this fantastic stuff with Kitt, who comes along on T.V. but those two angels with more magic to set things right. And it all happens without gun play. (I've watched all the guns they are toting around - they even make me wonder if we should start wearing a holster, too? ) I can only hope that before the season is over, we will have learned some of the magic to right the wrongs, stop the squabbl- ing and bring people back to their senses. That computer is a great and magical in- strument providing you have someone brainy enough to tell it all it will need to know. I can only hope too, they find a way - soon - to keep thieves from stealing impor- tant info' from these machines. When this is settled we can feel much safer in our homes - even in our country! That's when I will know we can reach another rung on that ladder. Everyone has their own ladder to climb. Some make it to the top quite easily - the rest of us have to work harder - and hope! My great-grandchildren - and yours - are growing into a wonderful new world. I think it is up to us to clean up our mess and give them a hand up. We have come a long way since the radio was the "cats' whiskers" - actually - since that is what they called that little bit of wire that searched out voices for us — the cats' whiskers! That was indeed a magic box when I was "just a kid" but the "kids" are becoming pretty nonchalant about all these magical things - they don't even appear to be in- terested in knowing where, when, what or why - or how they even came to be in our world and theirs. Someone, dad, should start teaching or ex- plaining a few facts so that when they reach Grade i they will not be surprised to know that we haven't always had these boxes! It is your child - tell him! Do take care of yourselves now that winter has really arrived with a howl. Call each other often. Then call another if you need help - the town hall, police, neighbour, anyone! Even Me! Love, Martha. Huron Historic Atlas gales exceed 2,300 copies It is just a little more than a month since the Huron County Historical Atlas was released and already more than 2,300 of the 350 page books have been delivered to pur- chasers in Huron and across Canada. In ad- dition another 200 copies of the atlas have been purchased and are awaiting delivery instructions. according to Goderich Township Reeve Grant Stirling who headed the county council committee responsible for the production of the atlas. While in the days following the initial release there were some production delays which resulted in disappointment for a number of atlas purchasers, this now has been resolved and the stock on hand is suffi- cient to meet day to day requirements. Of- ficials at the Court House in Goderich said the demand for the atlas was teady. They said in many cases the atlas weing pur- chased as a Christmas gift (((((( Filter "ween "INTHE HEART OF DOWNTOWN VARNA" 412-7103 GODERICH ESSO CENTRE All Repairs -Major, Minor •Party Supplies •VCR Tapes ani!
