for elettion loss
BY STEPHANIE CEVENUE
Farewells, bitter and sweet; Were given
by trustees of the ]Huron C orityboardof
education at the last meeting itf the 1983-
1985 school board, "
The most bitter comments caine from
Frank Falconer of RR5, Clinton, the
trustee who represents both Clinton and
Tuckersmith Township, He blamed the.
local • newspaper, The. Clinton News -
Record, for his loss in the municipal elec-
tion.
"The News -Record did everything in the
last week against me," said the five-year
veteran trustee.
Falconer was referring to a letter writ-
ten by a local citiien to the newspaper
about the conduct of an unidentifed
teacher. The letter writer has since writ-
ten a letter of apology to the school board
administration and teachers through the
newspaper.
The Clinton area trustee is seeking an
apology from the newspaper.
"I'm still dealing with the News -
Record," said the trustee.
He expressed his disappointment that
people have linked his duties as trustee
with the original letter which was publish-
ed the week before the municipal election.
Other losers 'in the election, Dorothy
Wallace of Goderich and Bob Peck of
Bayfield were more gracious. They thank-
ed their colleagues and the administrative
staff for their help over the years.
Outgoing chairman Eugene Frayne of
RR 3, Goderich had some words of advice
for some of the incoming trustees who
were present at the special meeting.
"Be cautious. You'll learn that your
power is as a board and not as an in-
dividual," said Frayne.
"It takes a little getting used to, but it
works successfully."
Another retiring trustee, Murray
Mulvey of RR 1, Clifford, said he has plea-
sant memories of his years on the school
board. The only retiring trustee, Clarence
MacDonald of Exeter, was absent from the
meeting.

Two vandals, aged 14 and 15, broke into three local schools—
Victoria Public School, Robertson Public School and GDCI. At Vic-
toria, they damaged the outside doors, at Robertson, they stole a
computer and at the high school, they ransacked the staff lounge
destroying the staff refrigerator. Here Constable K.R. Mason dusts

Stadelman guesses the winds were from
55 to 60 miles an hour on Monday.
High lake levels combined with the
westerly wind caused approximately
$50,000 in damage on St. Christopher's
Beach, said Works Commissioner Ken
Hunter.
The storm ripped about 300 feet of board-
walk off its footings and damaged the
lighting system wires running under the
boardwalk. A number of trees . were
damaged, the playground equipment was
moved or pushed over and the beach,
grass and a large tree were swept out into
Lake Huron.

Considerable damage was done to the
staff lounge at the Goderich District Col-
legiate Institute the same morning in a

"To put the land back is horribly expen-
sive," he said.
With lake levels approximately six in-
ches higher than the record high of 176.85
metres above sea level and a west wind,
waves were about six to eight feet high.
"I've seen it that wild before but there's
a difference when the water is so high. The
concrete dock at Snug Harbor had water
over it for the whole day even when it was
calm. And, there was a foot of sand on the
north pier," said Hunter.
There was no damage done on the main
beach.
"When the wind comes directly from the
west during a storm, it does a lot of
damage on St. Christopher's Beach."
