With tae ."Carriers, people no -longer came in to Iris office and I really missed that," he rid-• ,i As the centre of several printing firms, Paris had large mailings of parcel post 4nd the' postal workers had to load the ggage Gars at the railway station. "We d ' five minutes for half an hour's ding," remembers Farnsworth. He also remembers the time he arrived at work at 6 a.m. to discover the Paris post Office vault had been broken into and a good sum of cash and postage supplies stolen. Another time, he found a live chicken in the letter drop.on a Monday morning. "It was standing guard over Her Majesty's Mail but it found its way into a pot pie of one of the rural carriers," he said. In 1967, he was promoted to assistant postmaster in Stratford and in 1974, he became postmaster in Goderich. ' He remembers how he was called by the Goderich police in 1976 at 3 a.m. when there was a flood at the post office because both caretakers were away ' for the weekend. ' "I was met at the door with a floor Covered with water. The plumbing in the upper floor had broken and come down though the ceiling and the water was seeping into the mail bags on the floor. I was here until 6:30 a.m. getting the place mopped up," he says. As postmaster in Goderich, Farnsworth was responsible for overseeing the processing of mail, sales and delivery of mail including the rural routes. He also Mel Farnsworth, Goderich's postmaster for the past 11 years, has retired after 34 years of service to Canada Post. "Canada Post has really been good to me. I've enjoyed the moves from one place ' to another and I've been able to raise three boys (Carl, Joseph and Peter)." "I've always appreciated the people I've worked with in Canada Post. None of the strikes have started in small towns; they've just been victims of circumstances," he said. Retirement will be filled with music, woodworking, upholstry, cross country skiing and canoe trips with his wife, Beth. He also plans to continue his volunteer work with the Goderich Notary Club, the First Be ptist Church and the Canadian Cancer Society. "I'll have more opportunity to get involved in anything where I can help out," he said. Though Terry Miller will be acting postmaster, official word has not yet been received about who will become the next postmaster for the Goderich post office.
