"It the first time the diabetic association has ever canvassed in Goderich," says Joanne Collins. A drop-in centre for diabetics at the MacKay Centre the third Monday of every month is this year's project for the Lioness Club. Though the first night in Jane attracted close to 25 diabetics, the meetings average 15 to 20 each time. "It's a sharing, support system and it's been very successful. We send out 40 letters a month to diabetics we know in Goderich and thp number is growing all the time. We have new faces all the time which is great," says Collins. Of the money raised during the canvass of Goderich, 15 per cent will go to the Huron -Bruce Diabetic Association and the rest to head office in London for research. "By the year 2000, every family will be • hit with diabetes," says Collins. Control is goal for diabetes management Presently there is no cure for diabetes. The goal of diabetes management is control, which can be defined as keeping blood sugar levels in the body as close to normal as possible. Ideal blood glucose levels are between 3.3 - 6.2 mmol/L. However, the target range for each diabetic will vary and the physician will help each di: betic determine what his/her range shoal, he. The test result is obtained by inserting the test strip into a meter or by comparing the color of •the strip to a color chart. Proper training in technique and care and use of the meter is essential. Liaison with the doctor regarding interpreting and using results is most important. Frequency and timing of monitoring varies depending on type of diabetes; age, il- lness, complication and degree of control desired. The doctor or diabetes educator will help establish appropriate testing schedules for each individual. PURPOSE OF THE moNyroRs FOIV;; CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS The program will provide funding of home blood glucose monitoring devices to children and youth with diabetes in the pro- vince of Ontario who are 19 years of age or younger. • The Application Form should be filled out completely and clearly. The Doctor must sign the Application Form, or a letter of authorization from the Doctor must be at- tached, for all initial claims for Visual Strips or Meters. In addition, the invoice for the Meter must be attached, or in the case of strips, receipts for strips purchased after Sept. 1 should be accumulated to a total of $100 or more, attached to the Application Form and forwarded to the Ontario Division Office. . .
