G•oderich Guides say thanks for support
Dear Editor,
In what was the last event of our 75th
Celebration Year 'of Guiding, 1st and 3rd
Goderich Guides participated in the Santa
Claus Parade, with 1st company winning se-
cond prize in the ouchCategory.
They portrayed "A Charlie Brown
Christmas". A few mishaps occurred while
going around The Square, the main one be-
ing that our Christmas tree complete with
decorations blew off the wagon.
However, I'm told that an event like that,
would he typical in the life of Charlie Brown
and his friends.
We would like to thank all our parents,
friends, and anyone who participated in, or

it could be run responsibly and
professionally and without a major deficit.
Other communities have been unable to
accomplish that, but a little ingenuity and
creativity can do wonders.
Arguments can be nurtured with
relative success for both sides, but the fact
remains that if a community bands
together it can do wondrous things. But, it
has to want the facility and be willing to
work and pay for it.
This Thursday evening, the recreation
board will be discussing the issue with
interested citizens at its 7.30 meeting at the
recreation office in the grandstand.
Committee system changes
in a 5-3 recorded vote, Goderich
council's standing committee system was
changed from four to six committees at its
Nov. 25 meeting, the last meeting before
the new council is inaugurated.
The system, which was in operation for
the past three years including works,
administrative, parks and waterfront and
fire committees was changed to a six
committee system including
administration and personnel, works and
property, parks and waterfront, fire,
traffic and environment.
Three councillors will make up the first
three committees while two councillors
will compose the last three.
"I think there's been a lot of concern in
the past three years about which way to
throw the dirt. Issues have ended up in a
schmozzle all over the place. Issues like
parking on The Square should be looked
after with a traffic committee," said Coun.
Jim Searls.
Searls also said an environment
committee could look after the future of •
the 20 -year-old pollution control plant.
Coun. Glen Carey agreed and added that
council should also consider a tourism and
industrial committee.
Councillors Bill Clifford and Peter
McCauley disagreed that the system
needed to be changed.
"I felt the system has worked and I find
it hard to vote on this motion. Since I only
know about the four committee system, I
find it difficult to change horses in mid-
stream," says McCauley.
Clifford asked if the change of system
was only being done for the sake of
creating titles. He also questioned what
committees such as the environment
committee would concern itself with.
"The four committee system worked
exceptionally well. There was excellent
discussion with more council members on
each committee. All committees have to
have secretaries to take minutes and I've
no doubt they have more than enough to do
without extra meetings to gttend," said
Mayor Eileen Palmer.
Palmer recommended the question of
the committee system go the the
organizational review committee for
further research before any changes were
made.
Voting yea for the motion supporting a
six committee system were Reeve Harry
Worsell, Coun. Searls, Coun. Bob Cornish,
Coun. Glen Carey and Deputy Reeve John
Doherty. Voting nay were Coun. Clifford,
Coun. McCauley and Mayor Palmer.
