Colborne students prepare
float for Goderich Parade
The Grade eight pupils of Colborne Cen-
tral School, with a little help from the Grade
5 students, Mrs. McMillen, Mrs. Allan and
Mr. Ross are getting a float ready for the
Goderich Santa Claus Parade. They have
combined the parade theme with important
historic events from Colborne Township for
this our Sesquicentennial year. See you at
the parade.
The Grade 5 students are presently
writing a play for the Christmas Concert.
The play will be called "Winnie the Pooh's
Christmas". They are combining their
writing skills, organizational expertise and
creative talents to produce this play.
Grade 2 children are busy learning
reading, writing, arithmetic and much more
while participating in a robot theme. They
are using calculators, computers and
robots. There are lots of stories - real and
imaginary and many activities to try. While
the children are busy learning all they can
about robots, they are thinking about
building their own model of a robot.
Mrs. McMillen, the resource teacher and
Irene Millian accompanied a group of Mrs.
Hazlitt's Grade 6 students to Wingham on a
tour of CKNX-Tv. They have been studying
the world of advertising and will now be
prepared to make commercials of their own
in the classroom.
Grade 6 is happy to have shared the
friendship of Jennifer Bisset. They will miss,
her as she makes a new home in Strathroy.
Best of luck, Jennifer.
Hurrah! Now all Colborne Central's
Grade one students can make the numbers 1
to 50. It was hard work but they finally did
it! They also did some painting this week us-
ing straws instead of brushes. Blowing paint
through a straw makes a really neat tree.
. Grade 3 students at Colborne have learned
about Cluster Writing this week. This is a
method of planning and organizing material
for creative writing. They will also be using
a filing system on the computer to help
organize a unit on animal classification.
At the volleyball tournament held at GDCI
on Saturday, November 16 the Colborne
senior teams came away with two pennants.
The senior boys went through the day
undefeated to win the championship while
the senior girls lost only once to win the con-
solation pennant.
Brookside School Grade 1
class starts new unit
BROOKSIDE BROADCAST
by .Jennifer Dalton
and Raehel Fairbairn
This week l'1rs. Young's Grade 1 class has
started a new unit called Community
Helpers. They are also starting to print their
very own stories with the help of Mrs.
Sygrove. Mrs. Black and Mrs. Sproul came
in to help them practise reading and number
work!
On Friday, November 8, Mrs. Tebbutt's
and Mrs. Nivins Grades 3-4 classes visited
the Dungannon Cemetery. After working
through the group assignments, the students
knowledge of the early settlers of Ashfield
and West Wawanosh Township was greatly
enhanced.
The senior girls and boys volleyball teams
have been busy practising for their upcom-
ing tournament at G.D.C.I.
Mrs. Cameron's Kindergarten class made
paper plate kittens on Wednesday.
Mrs. Otterwell's Grade 3 planted paper
white narcissus bulbs in stones and water
and are measuring them regularly (as they
grow quickly).
On Tuesday November 12 Mr. Cameron's
Grade 8 class went to Toronto for the day.
They went to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Later they went to the program Careers
2001. Mr. Sygrove and Mr. Tremeer came
along.
On Friday, November 15, Mr. John
Sunkell came to Brookside to speak on his
home in New Zealand, He showed many
slides of the North and South Islands. The
classes who heard him were very in-
terested. Mr. Sunkell is spending a week at
Melissa Logtenberg's farm as part of a
Junior Farmers' Exchange.
Mrs. Clark's Grade 2 alphabet are enjoy-
ing lots of book activities and reading. This
week Marion Doucette visited the class to
teach the students how to make Gobbly
Gook puppets to go with their Liza Lou book.
They "gobbly-gooked" all day with Miss
Jewitt's Grade 2 class. Deb HelsiaAa also
helped the students start their new
Transformer and Go -Bot theme Mike
